Same old interviewees

Are Shami Chakrabati and Reeta Chakrabati related? I can't find any evidence to suggest they are.

I saw somewhere on the BBC website a declaration that they are not, which surprises me.

According to Wikipedia, Chakraborty/Chakrabarti is quite a common Bengali surname.

Harry in Afghanistan

Carole Walker said on the 6 that the MOD agreement to blackout the news had been with British and international news organisations. That'll explain how CNN have an "recent interview" with Harry.

Considering the logistics of how the blackout must have been organised, I'm pleased it managed to last 10 weeks.

BBC News 24: Presentation discussion

We've just had about five minutes of trailers on N24. BBC One were to simulcast N24 for the 3.55pm bulletin but looks like the rugby over ran. The weather ended about 3.54 and then we saw promos until N24 were straight to Peter Sissons at 4 (no countdown) saying something about "we'll bring you the news when we're joined by BBC One in a few minutes".

Nice to see Peter on BBC One though.

The Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Thread

Mark Simpson was live on N24 from Hebden Bridge, IIRC between 7-8.

BBC Breakfast

There was a feature on Look North Leeds this evening about Breakfast News at 25. It briefly showed Business Breakfast during the virtual era, opting out to the regions. I'm guessing it is from 1995.

Watch the report here (Click "Breakfast TV turns 25!").

Nice that they got Ian White to do that package, as he now owns the name, brand and logo of TV-am.

Just puts everything in perspective doesn't it.

God bless, Kevin.

Absolutely - he couldn't have been any older than what, mid-30s?

RIP.

He was 44, surprisingly.

I have many happy memories of Saturday and Sunday mornings at work listening to him on the breakfast show, with the very strange but funny comedy bits he did.

BBC News 24

No simulcast with 6 tonight, as the Space Shuttle landed at 6.01. That took until 6.07, and now Ben Brown's presenting single-handedly.

]Speaking of YTV, has anyone else seen their studios recently? All remaining traces of the chevron have been removed from the main Kirkstall Road building, replaced by the "ITV" corporate logo. It looks awful, in my opinion (for some reason, the large-ish chevron on the Emmerdale production centre has remained there).

I think the chevron is still on the sign at the Studio Road end of the drive down the front entrance, isn't it? I went past on Sunday and saw the new ITV logo and could have sworn I'd made a point of looking at the sign to see if that had been dechevroned too.

The morning of the 'Great Storm' (1987)

I guess with the Broom Cupboard having also been the BBC1 continuity booth at the time, it would have been one of the few areas of TVC to be able to operate on backup power, hence why they broadcast from there.

Yep it was also very basic and required very little power. When BBC 1 and 2 moved out of that area in the mid-90s the new area included a little 'Broom Cupboard' type fixed-camera studio for such eventualities (and in case of failiure in the CBBC studio). Don't think it was ever used though.

I've got a memory of Noel Edmonds broadcasting from the Broom Cupboard in an emergency once. Something to do with the House Party not being broadcast due to a bomb scare? Was that before or after the move?

The morning of the 'Great Storm' (1987)

Does anybody else remember what the TV networks did on the morning of the 1987 'hurricane'?

BBC One from 6am had a graphic saying something about programmes disrupted due to major power problems in the South East'. Then sometime before 7, a makeup-less Nicholas Witchell appeared from the CBBC Broom Cupboard (the kids' pictures had been hastily removed!) to tell us what had been happening.

By 8, there was enough power for Paxman to present Breakfast Time from a very sparse studio, and once that was over, most of the morning was a extended edition of Open Air, as it came from Manchester.

(If I remember all this correctly.)
