BBC News 24 OFF AIR! 4:15am

In the days when overnights came from N9 (World) you could see at the top of the hour the one second difference. While on N24 we were getting the newsreader looking at the desk, the monitors in the background were showing the last second of the World countdown, only once all were showing the newsreader would he/she begin.

Well I noticed it anyway Confused ...

That's more to do with the ringmain version of World in the building. Coming from an analogue satellite, there's a small delay.

And that the set WILL break down one day! Laughing

That's not what he said.

He was asked if he was worried that it would one day fail, and he said yes. That's a perfectly reasonable thing to say. And then he said there were 'backup systems'.

Any set of the technical complexity that theirs will have problems one day. To say that it never will is foolish. And he didn't.

Erm, he did. But he said there were back-up systems to counter that.

It helps if you read posts before repling to them.

Mannion's message is solely that the new set is delivering news in a totally different way.

Sorry, but that's crap. A set doesn't make news good. It helps, but their 'theatre' is not all he's making out to be.

But they are. You may not like it, and that's your opinion. But it is different from N24 and Sky.

But it's not delivering news in a vastly original way. Just cause someone is walking round, talking into a package, looking at a big virtual screen etc etc....

It's not new. It's not even exciting. Yes it's my opinion, but 99.9999% of viewers don't care. It's only us lot who argue this sort of thing.

I say again; a fancy set doesn't make your news 'good' if editorially you've got a duff product.

Take this as you wish, but ***** Brass told me around a year ago now that the countdown can be set to run one second early for World simulcasts.

Perhaps. Anything is possible.

The News 24 tower returned at around 5pm this evening. However, they are still having problems with the countdown, e.g. the countdown b4 18.00 was shown slightly too early and when the camera went to Peter Sissons, it was still 17.59, no 18.00! Guess it means they're still having problems with the countdown!

At 19.00, News 24 was back in its original studio, with the main titles back on air rather than the BBC News Generic which was shown at the TOTH most of the day when broadcasting from the World studio.

When they are producing joint bulletins the news 24 countdown usually runs a few seconds early so that world can opt in more cleanly.

I'm not entirly sure that's correct. The countdown is an automatic event, which just starts itself at 58:29 and a bit. I've never knows it to be changeable.

That doesn't explain why they were broadcasting from the World studio without the Tower or TOG graphics. Doesn't the World gallery have access to News 24 graphics?

If you generally take power away from a machine that needs it, the machine tends to stop working.

The World studio is purpously (spelling?) not on the same power circuit as News 24's, meaning it can usually continue to broadcast something. But it's servers are based where the power problems hit. So yes, it does explain it.

Well I've read through this thread as carefully as I can and don't know for certain what caused what happening.

Was it a power cut?

It was a human error.

The management are not impressed Evil or Very Mad

What human error could have taken out both the studio AND graphics?

Um, an error that means the power goes off.

Well if you'd name your sources and wouldn't pretend to be working, when we all know you're still at primary school, we might take you serously.

Clear off cretin!

I DO work at sky, I am 26 (27 later this year) and i do not go to primary school! Rolling Eyes

Those who claim that they do/are anything are usually lying.

If you do work for Sky, then you must have some level of maturity; but you don't show it on here in your posts.

Your information in usually wrong anyway, and you always get caught up in silly disputes. It ain't funny.
