Anyone else think that screen looks empty without the BBC News box in the lower left?
It also looks like a last minute effort. Why does the animation on the plasma lack the orange elements which are present both in the opening titles of the Five AND in the animations on the plasma screens in the background? Even in this single shot you can see very clearly that the animations don't match.

I think that it is the number of shifts...but I don't know if it includes network bulletins.
The number of shifts in brackets is only for shifts on the BBC News Channel. I understand that the list is not very well comprised, and BBC News Fix shall recount the numbers at the end of September when the next quarterly update is published. I think that for a first attempt there were mistakes, and the next count shall include ANY WORK a BBC News Channel presenter has done + ANY ON-LOCATION WORK.
There still remains one question............what's the point?!
And logic finally returns after a worrying absense.
So good to hear that logic's back. Which bulletin did he present? Or was he on the News Channel? Which female presenter was he paired with? How was their on-screen chemistry? Oh, I'm so excited

Are the numbers in brackets a number of days the presenter worked?

I was asking the same question a month or so ago. I guess it's safe to say now that Geeta is no longer with WN. Not sure if she left BBC altogether or if she's doing something behind the scenes or on the radio, like Kirsty Lang.
Anyway, last few weeks Martine has been doing a lot of the late morning (9-1 cet) shift. I sure hope she's the new permanent presenter along with Nik Gowing, at the same time the replacement for Geeta. For the last few years Martine has been wasted on the early morning weekend shift.
Calm down, guys! Geeta Guru-Murthy presents the 0800-1200 GMT shift every Tuesday. And there are even videos of her:

Where has Geeta Guru-Murthy disappeared to? She hasn't done the 11.30am BBC Two simulcast for a while now...

Which studio is Focus on Africa actually coming from now that it has moved to a new slot due to Daylight Saving Time? - I remember that World was supposed to use Studio B until 1830 BST - does this mean that Focus is now coming from Studio C or are they simply staying in Studio B for an additional 30 minutes?

In that "blooper" last week of Mike Embley and the countdown, when they eventually crossed away from Mike to the static shot of the camera facing the Newswall, it could be seen that the camera does have a monitor mounted to it, but above rather than below the main fixture.
Meantime, on today's Focus on Africa with Sophie Ikenye, did anyone else notice that the screens only showed a static FOA globe throughout the programme? No other significant imagery was used. Also, the globe did not "animate" in the way it usually does.

Huh?? Interesting indeed. Did he present the overnights before? Not so sure.
Well, Mike Embley, who at least used to be regarded as a senior presenter on BBC World News is the regular presenter of what you call "overnights". Mind you, that this is primetime in other areas of the world.

Shouldn't be, BBC World News and BBc World Service work around the clock.
I'm aware of that, but it's conceivable that the newsroom won't have as many people in on Christmas Day as your average Tuesday!
Let alone on a day of strike action

There must surely be a plan for a different kind of opener at times like Christmas and maybe even weekends when the newsroom would look a bit empty?

I am quite sure that David Eades was the main presenter by the December 2003 relaunch (with Annita McNaught or Mike Embley doing Fridays and standing in for him). When David Eades moved to weekday mornings, Lucy Hockings became the main presenter. Later, Jonthan Charles took over from her (with Lucy Hockings moving to late mornings - remember the double-headed newshour with David Eades and Lucy Hockings). When Jonathan Charles left the BBC, yet another pattern was established with Komla Dumor and Naga Munchetty alternating on a weekly basis for the Monday-Thursday slot and Martine Dennis doing Fridays. Since the start of Focus on Africa, the Mon-Thu 0500-0800 slot has been presented by Naga Munchetty most of the time, with Komla Dumor and Martine Dennis as stand-in presenters.
And during all that time, Sally Bundock was (and still is) the business presenter - apart from the times she was on maternity leave (Manisha Tank covered her first maternity leave, Tanya Beckett the second).
On another note - Martine Dennis did not move straight to the 0800-1200 shift when she left TWT, she first became a regular evening presenter, alternating with Nik Gowing on the 1600-2000 shift before she moved to the 0800-1200 shift.

Gosh, that's a toughie. I seem to recall that once Martine left the shift, 2003 was mainly a mixture of Mike Embley, Adrian Finighan, Anita McNaught and David Jessel on the TWT shift. It was certainly rather unpredictable for a while. I think David Eades became its main presenter in 2004. It's quite hard to remember specific details after a decade though. I know that Lucy Hockings didn't take over TWT until much later on - in 2003 she was still a relief weekend presenter at best, but spent most of her time as a producer.

Well, she used to be the permanent Tuesday-Friday presenter of that shift before David Eades took over from her.

World News looking good in HD!
This video in the video thread gives a good impression of the newsdesk in Studio C. It shows that World's desk is bigger than that in Studio E (as can be seen especially during the double-headed paper review and the closing of the programme towards the end of the video).

If you compare World's desk to the News Channel's desk you can see that World's desk is definitely bigger - compare the wide shots of the News at One with those in the link above.
