A job with the civil service doesn't exactly sound like a dream journalism job...?
Who is/wants to be a journalist?
Roger Mellie posted:
If you do want to undertake a journalism course, I would recommend the BA Honours Journalism course at the University (see here).
You the main types of journalism: TV, radio, print, photography and Internet. I did the course; it was very enjoyable and useful. It got me a job in a photography department at the civil service at any rate.
Hope the link helps. BTW Lincoln is fantastic city.

At Cardiff, for instance, newspaper students do NTCJ exams and then harder Cardiff exams on top. Broadcasters don't.
But the BJTC (Broadcast journalist training scheme) hasn't had the same credibility problems, and the top courses mostly stick to it.
Generally the two schemes emphasize training 'journalists' but some courses also give students a push-start to later become 'editors'.
As Broadcast courses go, the top ones are perceived (by students and potential employers) to be Cardiff, City, Preston and Westminster. But generally it's seen more favourably if you do a general undergrad degree and then do a postgrad journalism degree.
And if you want to get onto any of those four, you'll need to have done plenty of work experience at student radio and elsewhere.

The BJTC/NTCJ thing is a bit complicated - the NTCJ (Newspaper journalist training scheme) has lost a lot of its credibility recently and many of the top courses have/are thinking of going without it.At Cardiff, for instance, newspaper students do NTCJ exams and then harder Cardiff exams on top. BBC News Thread
Kate's report on the main news last night was 'borrowed' from another correspondent. It had been shown all day on News 24 - the script and pictures were pretty much identical, but with Kate's voice and a piece-to-camera slapped on the end for BBC One.

No, I agree with you, NBC is crap. They don't know how to handle new shows (such as Studio 60 which is an appalling match for Heroes on Mondays). It all comes down to lack of audience/budget, although an enormously expensive show like Studio60 is getting only 2million more viewers than Spooks now. There's a new show coming to BBC One soon about the British Ambassador to the U.S. which looks really good (and with high production values), but it's a shame these shows (much like State of Play) are few and far between, and tend to have short runs. I'd love to see some 22-part series in the UK.

BBC Two: new idents from Sunday 18 February
I'd like to see a channel's idents given over to a series of music video directors. Good ones, anyway. They often seem to have more creativity in them than traditional ident-makers.
