Sky News | General Discussion

Problems on Sky News just now, seems like the wrong Ian King Live was put into playout.
Kimberly previewed the Ian King Live repeat before the break at 1:30. Ian King Live (presented by Emma Crosby) started with the headlines but then after the headlines it was just Emma chatting to producers/preparing off air for 10 seconds then we then cut to black screen before another ad break and now it’s back to Kimberly in Studio 6 who is seemingly filling now until 2am now with other news.

So Ian King Live without Ian King and not live.

Well quite actually why they’re repeating Ian King Live 12 hours after it’s happened I’m not sure. When it was at 6:30pm it was kind of still relevant with less business stories breaking after 5pm but anything could happen in the city between 1:30pm-5:00pm when trading is still on meaning repeating the show at 1:30am seems a little odd.

Good Morning Britain

Jetting off to LA 5 days before broadcast, I think we know who’s getting the most out of the Oscars special (and it’s not the viewers!):

Given how little interest GMB’s target audience have in the Oscars, it’s surprising that they’re making such a fuss about it.

I’m surprised how big they’re seemingly going on the oscars this year mind. Seems a bit OTT. I’m in the minority that I literally don’t care but is the average viewer that invested or cared to warrant the majority of the show coming from LA? I’m happy to stand corrected but I fear that the majority of the show will be from LA with just news inserts from Charlotte in London. I’m holding out hope that’ll they have Charlotte in London (alongside Kate or whoever, Sean even?) presenting other items, such as the news reviews/interviews etc. Almost like a 50-50 split between London and LA.

Good Morning Britain

I thought Andi Peters usually filled in.

Not in quite a while. Recently it's been a mix of Joe Swash, Laura Whitmore and Ian Lee.

Yes they have - Laura Whitmore being my personal favourite, competent and still comes across friendly on screen. Joe Swash, although I’m not his biggest fan, also did an okay job. Iain Lee didn’t fit the GMB vibe in my opinion almost felt like he didn’t really want to be there. I’d like to see Laura become a regular deputy on the show, however any of the names mentioned are far and away better than Spencer’s appearance today. But GMB is all about headlines right now, good, bad or otherwise - so having “competent journalist presents fluid entertainment bulletin on GMB” doesn’t quite work aswell as “Reality star apologises for awkward appearance on GMB”.

I disagree, that still sounds awkward. The inflection on "and" is wrong. It reminds me of automated train announcements.

I would hazard a guess that the whole voiceover is done in individual parts. He must record “From ITV Studios, This is GMB” and then all the hosts invidually “with Charlotte Hawkins”/“With Kate Garraway”/“With Piers Morgan” etc. Together with a separate “and” with each day someone must edit them together and remove the with on the second hosts name.
Although I imagine they’ll have the common pairings done in advance for the regular teams ie. Piers & Susanna/Kate & Ben/Susanna & Ben.

Charlotte seems to be the main relief presenter at the minute. She’s hosted every day they’ve been on since Christmas Eve, nice to see Ranvir last Thursday & Friday too. Richard Gaisford was newsreading a few days last week and Joe Swash was on today plus last week on Entertainment filling in for Richard Arnold.
Also they seemed to have a new background/window image during the Tyne Tees Opt this morning at 6:15am, I recall a discussion about the Tyne/Wear Bridges on here a few weeks back. Mind I couldn’t make out what the image was...

BBC Breakfast - 2018 Refresh

JAS84 posted:

It is a normal weekday.
Only if you work in retail, hospitality, the emergency services, or something similar that still works in the holidays.

"Only(!)" Those three industries are hardly insignificant but banks, post offices and many other offices are also back to normal. This period is more akin to half term than a bank holiday.

‘Only’ is the wrong term obviously there’s exceptions but JAS84 is correct to an extent as there’s many people who are off between Xmas and New Year, lots of offices, council buildings, factories etc who’d be open during half term are closed on the days inbetween Christmas & New Year.
Having said that, Breakfast finishing at 7:50 and having no regional bulletins is a mistake when as you have pointed out; some are back to work (calls centres, retail) considering GMB was on til 8:30 with its usual regional 3 bulletins.

This Morning

I think Ben Shephard is the obvious replacement for Phil - Dermot O’Leary could be one for it, Rylan too could take over. You are right there’s much more scope for female replacements though I’d also suggest that Matt Edmondson & Mollie King could be the next ready made duo should both Phil & Holly leave.

Charlotte back on newsreading duties this morning, back from what she called a ‘holiday’ in Australia. Not sure where the mirror got the idea she was covering I’m a celeb as far I known GMB/Charlotte haven’t covered I’m a Celeb in any detail.

I’m a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! 2018

I agree with comments about the itv2 show. I have enjoyed watching the spin off show periodically during the series run, but it lacks a proper presenter. The best era was Laura Whitmore with Joe Swash and Rob Beckett, Laura was capable enough to keep the show running and doing a few bits of light chatter that wasn’t chaotic but you had the comedian in Rob to make fun of everything and then Joe to be the former camp mate/ bit of clown as such but Laura still kept the show moving. Caroline Flack with Joe and Russell Kane was a decent era too. But since they renamed the show, and Joe was paired with Chris Ramsey, Vicky Pattison, Stacey Solomon and then now Joel and Scarlett it’s gone down hill.

As has being pointed out, two different but very similar bridges in shot. I don’t think there’s any need to change the standing position of the regional headlines on GMB, however if they’re going to sit down as Rachel is there then I’d remove the usual regional backdrops in favour of just a still image a bit like the collection of screens that are seen behind the newsreader/Richard Arnold/Guests on GMB and that would keep the style of GMB going through.

I brought this up last time and almost got lynched, but Laura's delivery here is so poorly judged considering it's a disaster in which tens of people have died and hundreds more are missing.

It's so tone deaf to deliver this as a standard weather forecast. I was half expecting her to say "here's your summary" at the end.

I don’t think her delivery was that bad tbh, she may well have delivered it as normal weather forecast, but I think that is the style there were going for as otherwise the newsreader could have talked through the graphics. I don’t think there’s an issue here.
