Is Calendar back double headed? Or is Christine doing the live programme while Duncan did the pre recorded programme?

Does anyone else find it weird that Julie seems to get all the anniversaries, despite Tom being Lead Anchor?

Lead? I thought he and Julie alternate as the 10pm newsreaders? They seem to do about the same amount of days.

Nope, Tom’s definitely the ‘Lead’. Ironic to have a bbc article on it!

The Sky News Thread

Double post but notable that Stephen Dixon is covering for his pal Kay Burley; presenting 7am-10am this Friday. Will be interesting to see how the format/studio/branding without Kay.

Sky using Adam Boulton to lead presentation today, not sure if it’s warranted in my opinion. I don’t mind Adam, but his styles a little different to what the daytime slots are usually. It’s almost as if Sky have a big story and they must have Adam front all day on College Green, from the bits of presentation I’ve seen I’m not sure why they couldn’t have come from the Glass Box or Westminster with the usual daytime presenters. Down the line interviews etc. seem a lot smoother from a a studio position. Then have Beth Rigby and perhaps Adam on the green for analysis/reactions.

Worth noting, Jayne Secker also anchoring parts from Reading while Sarah Hewson/Colin Brazier didn’t appear from what I’ve seen today, they may have been at the Glass Box in case of links going down.

Surely, they should have handed over to ITV News to cover the speech and analysis?

Wasn’t it a bit short notice? And they probably thought it was worth utilising Nick and Julia.

I think ITN could of provided something, it was common knowledge about this commons statement.
I guess for ITV viewers, keeping Holly & Phil on might keep more viewers on board.

And now Adam has protesters behind him on Abingdon Green.

I’d argue for average viewers it distracts so much that I truly don’t see why being outside is considered. Has Adam done any in person interviews on the green?

Fire alarm at Sky News

Main event is now on adverts

Well they’re showing a loop of the same two promos for 15 minutes. Presumably it’s all play out had to hand quickly rather than show the simulcast of SSN’s breakdown.

Fire alarm at Sky News

Sky Sports News off air at present.

Fire alarm in Sky Studios. Sky News is on the backup tape at the moment, SSN has a replay of the last hour on tape normally but that relies on someone in TX being able to run it.

Is Sky Sports News generally pre recorded at 11pm?

Fire alarm at Sky News

Worth mentioning here that Sky Sports News also affected, although no standby tape available for them, instead they’ve got some classic breakdown music and a breakdown slide.

Fire alarm at Sky News

Sky News at Eleven interrupted “by a fire alarm in the area where our programme is controlled from”, says Anna Botting.
We’re now seeing ‘stand by tape’ from Martin Brunt with Conman: The life and crimes of Mark Acklom.

ITV did next to nothing on the night itself regarding the Manchester Arena bombing IIRC.

Because they were off air. The scale of what had happened only became clear very late at night.

ITV News do have the capability of late night Newsflashes. The London Bridge terror attack in 2017 came to light close to midnight, and a Newflash came to air then, about two hours since that day's final bulletin. And Julie returned for another Newsflash on Sunday morning.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KCYwVoy7VI

For the Manchester Arena attacks, the details were very sketchy as to what exactly happened for most of the night which the news channels mostly struggled with and the details only really came to light once the breakfast programmes came to air. ITV News took over coverage that whole morning, so I think they did as well as they could with that.

I think location plays a part here. ITN could portably have picked umpteen resources do a report on the London Bridge terror attack as most of their team are going to be based in the capital. Whereas finding the same resources required at the time in Manchester would have been more difficult, albeit it far from impossible. Greater Manchester Police confirmed fatalities, amid a reported explosion at 23:45 that night, so if ITV didn’t manage a breaking news flash at all that night, then that isn’t ideal. A decision was probably based on how much information and detail they could bring to air, if all ITN had was the police statement then it might have been deemed as a little thin. Whereas having a reporter on the ground gives a more detailed breaking news report. Having said that, I still think a newsreader and reporter in London could have provided a useful breaking news flash that night.

I commented on the strange setup not the Tweet that linked the video.

Incidentally, the BARB figures are out for Burley's new show and unsurprisingly it doesn't make top the15. Stephen Dixon makes number one with the 8am half hour of his Sunday show and number eight for the 7.30am 30 minutes.

Bet Kay loves that!

Last time I checked Stephen had a co-host...
