Am I in the minority in thinking that Nick's factfiles are usually patronising and incredibly cheesy (not in a good way?) The use of graphics and the camera angle makes the set look even more cramped than usual.

Looks like that's a yes then Laughing

BBC 1 globe

VERY impressive. Clean, crisp, simple effective - like all the best ideas.

The only change I would make is for the streched bg globe to be replaced by a simple flate Mercator projection. It could still be held in the eliptical mask, but wouldn't look as distorted.

Can Some one make me a logo?

this could be him.

It would suggest he's probably about 14 yrs old!

Very disappointing coverage of the Tonga earthquake on News 24 during the Five.

It just shows how News 24's graphics team are far far inferior to that of Sky News. Sky have had the Breaking News strap up since JT broke the news with updates appearing as they come in. No need for the presenter to spend a lot of time on it as there are few details, but the strap on Sky works so well.

On News 24, no info on the graphics at all except when Huw read it out.

WHEN WILL NEWS 24 LEARN! Graphics are more important when the presenter ISN'T reading it out. They should keep us in touch while the channel moves on.

Tsk!

Interesting point - and you're right - they were no graphics, but to blame the graphics team is simply wrong. The graphics get there IF they are requested and as we've seen before N24 are quicker than SKY, just as often as SKY are quicker than N24. It all depends on what the focus of the editorial and journalistic side is at the time. This applies to both the straps - done in the gallery, and the maps etc - done in the graphics area.

GMTV NewsHour

REALLY impressed with this. Just maybe not for GMTV, bizzarly. It looks like a heavy and serious news brand along the lines of Newsnight. Just too dark for a start of the day strand.

Love the speed ramps - you really understand motion/edit/pace. It's classy, simple and effective. Only slight crit - the ending makes it a little "The day Today" - just a bit too cheese/comic. Perhaps you could re-do with, say a Newsnight logo, as they will be relaunching shortly, I'd expect too see some ideas from other mockers soon.

Yeah you are right sorry.

I was just looking through some pages, and now that the new look has settled in. I now think the 2004 look looked so much more professional with the graphics.

The newswall worked so much better. Now it looks very messy, especially with that stupid clock face around the studio floor.

They could have made a really nice background with the new look graphics, a dark teal with lighter light beams slowly animating. Also there were no restrictions with the previous look, now a lot of camera angles dont work.

Have to dissagree with this. The new look is cleaner, crisper, brighter fresher and more welcoming. It creates an immense amount of depth which makes the studio look huge.
The overall graphics package has been cleaned up, simplified and is now more coherent than (IMO) any other news organisation.

I DO think that sometimes the don't use the wall to its best advantage and that sometimes the use of vt to illustrate the stories can lead to a messy look, but the example captures differ in that one is a graphic treatment and the other a vt split. When the use a graphic inset treatment it works much better than the old style.

Also think its kinda irrelevent whether the old look was any good or not. It's been redesigned - move on. If there are changes to be made, suggest looking to the future, not the past! Smile

oh yes... just the musings of an occasional poster... maybe the powers that be will give it some thought.

think about it... Film 24... you'd have 18 years before it clashed with the Jonathan Ross show over on BBC One...

This is the kind of thing I'd personally like to see 24 do more of. Apart from the opportunity to do some fantastic visuals, they should find a really respected reviewer to present...no idea who that miight be, but it could be a great 'appointment' style strand.

I like Film 24, with its Jono-fan Woss allusions; maybe 24 Frames? too. Just as long as it's not Film Review with...the BEEB are so good at snappy names! Wink

Give it a nice primetime slot, maybe the weekend?

Ok, ok...I know... I'm obsessed, but the most amazing Fact File just went out.

A fully working solar system, star trek transporters...the works!

It was live but they even made Nick vanish at the end.

Looks much better, and anyother time, that window would just show an animated ITV news video.

Interesting idea, and one that was considered. However, it tends to be far more restrictive in terms of studio use and camera shots than the chosen window layout.
But it does beg the question, if you don't feel the current look works, but the image must remain in the wall, how could this be improved? Answers in a mock design.......
