The Family Guy Uncancelled!!!

Fantastic news! A series well worth recommissioning, it's just superbly written! I just got the box set a few weeks ago and when you watch the Extra's DVD, it really bring home what an innovating and daring show it was for Network US television. As Quagmire might say to the news, "Alllrrrriiight!" Very Happy

Wonder if it'll be people shots at last!

I'm remotely horrified of that prospect, people shots either really work or they don't! Just what could BBC NI do? I suppose we've as many locations worth shooting if they went for an English regions style, but that's been around for a while now and whatever they have up their sleeves for the Nations, I'd sooner expect it to be the next new look rather than an adaptation of an existing one. I hope it's tied in well with the National look though.

Question is, will this new look mean the move to a soft set, even on the side, like many of the English regions have done? UTV have one so who knows! Newsline does tend to be a harder news programme though but then lets not for get that potato field farce last year!

As for Jackie, well I suppose the difference between broadcast journalism and merely writing for a newspaper or even radio I suppose is that you face must fit, and with the younger Stephen Watson on the team, I suppose this move was inevitable. Just so long as Jackie's still about somewhere though, as the artical said, he's still going to be on BBC NI, just not Newsline.

Veteran sports presenter out in the cold in newsline shake-up
BBC axe star Jackie from TV studio slot

26 March 2004
VETERAN sports presenter Jackie Fullerton is to be sidelined from his studio presenting role in a BBC shake-up, it was revealed today.

The 60-year-old anchor man, who has worked in broadcasting for 30 years, will no longer present the sports slot on the Newsline programme which goes out at 6.30pm.

It is understood Jackie will continue to report on sport and to take part in outside broadcasts, but will not work in the studio.

The move is believed to be part of a Newsline shake-up by BBC bosses, which will include a new studio set.

The news that smooth-talking Jackie is being axed as a studio presenter has shocked staff within BBC Broadcasting House, particularly as he has regularly topped popularity polls and has long been considered the face of BBC sports coverage in Northern Ireland.

One insider said: "Everyone's really surprised and astonished at this move.

"Jackie tops the opinion polls all the time as the most popular presenter and to move him from the studio seems a very strange thing to do.

"Even if he is still out and about reporting, he has, in effect, been axed as a presenter."

Jackie, who will soon turn 61, had expressed an interest in reducing his workload, but sources say the news has still come as a big shock to him.

A spokesman for BBC Northern Ireland said: "Jackie is one of Northern Ireland's best known and most respected sports commentators.

"He is the acknowledged expert commentator and presenter across a wide range of BBC Northern Ireland sporting output and continues to be an integral part of the BBC Newsline team."

Before moving to the BBC, he worked for UTV.

During one memorable report he was famously lifted up and dropped to the floor by wrestling champ Giant Haystacks.

About time!! Hopefully David Lowe has a nice little remix on the go for the new look as well!

Noels House Party

TyneTeesTelevision posted:
All Noel's House Party needed was a new presenter and a slight change to some of the features.. as Ant And Dec have proved. i'm surprised it isn't called Ant and Dec's Saturday Party.

Yup, it did need an overhaul and I felt that the series before the end was a good move in the right direction but it wasn't to be, the last series was so far removed from House Party that it was doomed. I did see some of Ant and Dec tonight though and they prove that when done properly, the format can still survive and their show has a great buzz about it. Glad to see the era of big sets and big audiences on Saturday night primetime aren't dead!

It says something about the state of things when a channel gets credit for managing to put up an apology slide...

Yet another breakdown at UTV just now. The entire ad break at 16:40 was replaced by a static UTV logo.

Just before we rejoined Coronation Street, Gillian Porter apologised (verbally) for the 'gremlins'.

Let's see what happens at 17:05.

I saw that too! Thought the static daytime logo looked good, especially them using the blue logo. Nice touch that the announcement was live, as we later saw Gillian on UTV Live, we can assume they simply utilised having her kicking about at the time!

Seems UTV have a fair dose of gremlins in their system tonight. Sound lost during the mid ad break in the 8.30 Corrie, then they opted out of the network ECP, keeping the network sound (perhaps intentional), however opting back in didn't go so well, a network ITV1 branded trailer, then 30 seconds or more of dead air time when UTV fell off air, then a few more silent adverts.

Glad to see some things never change, adds that quaint 'regional' touch! Rolling Eyes

'Tis a pity because I think that set looks absolutely fabulous!

Same here! Love this concept on the screens of white instead of black for the nations and regions. A really bright set too, very spacious looking and contemporary while retaining all the corporate elements needed! Looking forward to seeing more, especially of the titles Des!

"C4 & C5 have discussed a merger"

Yeah, I knew it had been speculated before as regards their advertising sales but as for C4 and Five actually being one, as Larry said, C4 being owned by a foreign firm mightn't be too politically popular, although with the liklihood of ITV plc getting into US hands in the not too distant future, perhaps this move won't seem too out of place in what will be a very different market place in a few years.

Come to think about it, BBC post-2006 Charter Renewal, ITV plc if a US takeover happens, C4/5 merged and Sky's long-awaited sixth terrestrial channel, British Broadcasting could well be a very different place entirely in a few years time...

Catchy name Smile I think UTV are running a trailer at the moment combining a 24 Hour Quiz trailer, and Tina, Frank and Pamela in a pose similar to the recent ITV News new look trailer.

"According to UTV, UTV Live at 5:30 will return in April. Whether this will actually happen, given what other ITV regions have done to this slot, is anyone's guess..."

Sudden takeover by ITV plc permitting, I'm sure UTV Live will be back at 5:30 when the time comes.

I'd say this is good timing for a trial run at how UTV Live's lighter segment would perform in a different slot, and if it does as well or better than the normal regional output at that time, I wouldn't be surprised if UTV kept it there. The fact that they're backing down at all over this issue is amazing as in the past, they've done everything to juggle around the format so as to keep their regional hour between 5.30 and 6.30, particularly if you remember when ITV put Crossroads in that slot.

Incidentally, what is the 24 hour quiz and what is the relevance for the regions? Does it have a specifically regional element?

I thought it was a great programme, alas no mention of Kay but all the others I expected were there! Just one exception though - Alan Titchmarsh! All in all a good show though, some hilarious stories and the Mailbox looks fantastic.

Media Careers Information Days

We had one of these in Belfast back in October there, held at Queens University Belfast. Was a very good afternoon out, especially for meeting local celebs such as, erm, Julian Simmons and of course for getting the aforementioned BBC leaflets in a BBC bag.

As far as the media career advice went, I found it extremely helpful. Representatives from our local Hospital Radio stations gave advice on where and how to start while the BBC and UTV gave plenty of insight for those potentially entering the industry, post-grad in their various departments. Well worth the time!

yes JM.

I think the way our soap titles stay the same shows how things can be left alone unlike Neighbours who constantly faf about with theirs/

Oh you ain't seen anything yet, just nip round a few Neighbours sites and you'll soon find at least the caps. Dire is one word, that's being diplomatic, very disappointed in the 'direction' they've taken. Rolling Eyes
