Jason Manford one of the best comedians and presenters around. Only just turned over after The Circle but can already see there is an energy there that wasn't earlier.

And of course they had New Faces, first alongside them on ITV in the 70s, and then both were revived in the late 80s with New Faces on ITV and Opportunity Knocks on the BBC.

The appeal films are important but they're a bit of a downer. The night used to be more about rewarding those who had been fundraising for Red Nose Day with an evening of comedy and earning their money that way. They keep going on about how tough a year it has been for many people but not taken the opportunity to try and put a smile on the nations face.
Also obviously been controversy in recent years about sending rich white celebrities to Africa, which they've scaled back on over the last coupoe of appeals (obviously this year is a bit different anyway) which may have resulted in people telling their own stories, but means the films perhaps aren't as engaging as they once were. There is a huge difference to someone reacting in the studio to a pre-recorded video to them actually being out there - and it helped link the fundraising to what the money is actually spent on.

I’m sure the amount of time spent on appeal films has gone up in recent years.
I’ve only had it on since Corrie finished at 8:30, and I’ve already seen three appeal films and three run throughs of the text numbers

They should have just had Jimmy Carr replace the audience.
Agree with the comments it is so generic though - this feels like the best Children in Need in years.

You’d think they’d have some people like Katherine Ryan, Alan Carr, Jack Whitehall, Romesh Ranganathan and Jimmy Carr presenting this, not a former Doctor Who and talent show judges. I don’t even consider Paddy McGuiness to be someone from the world of comedy anymore, given we’re so used to him presenting light entertainment formats.

They need to concentrate the theming more too - the big Egg & Spoon Race the One Show did seems more appropriate for Sport Relief, though as it's The One Show they'll probably do it every year for the next decade anyway.
Obvioulsy lacking the energy an audience brings but to be honest I don't think the content is much different to the last few years, and that's the problem. It needs to find it's edge again. The highlight so far has genuinely been a couple of seconds of some puppets from 25 years ago.

The £25.4 million raised so far is very impressive for a Comic Relief night that's comparatively cutback compared to previous ones. That said, for an event known as "Comic Relief" there's been very little comic stuff happening. It's just feels like a generic BBC charity telethon show, albeit without an audience in the studio. The whole thing needs a bit of a reboot in time for next year's Sport Relief.

It's felt a bit Children in Need tonight. So many brilliant comics around at the moment - really could have done with them front and centre.

Worth remembering back at the turn of the Millennium you had Planet 24/Castaway insisting Big Brother was a rip-off of Survivor, even though their original formats had very little in common other than being early reality shows. Indeed 20 years on with all the shows that have followed it is even more noticeable how different they are.

That's it - I want a refund on my donation.
Good to see the Fleabag/Normal People crossover from the Irish Red Nose Day gets an airing here.

Duncan Newmarch has failed his sponsored silence for Comic Relief. Well done Duncan...

You can add jewellery making to that now with All That Glitters - aka The Great British Bling Off. As Jon said though most of these are by Love Productions (although this isn't) and that is perhaps a more recent trend compared to straight rip offs - production companies milkined a format they've created in as many ways as possible.

The Great British Bake-Off has spawned a whole flock of rip-offs using more or less the exact same format but replacing the skill: sewing, glass blowing, hairdressing, flower arranging, dog grooming, pottery.
