Freeview: The DTT Thread

DJGM posted:
As I've said, we really don't need any more shopping channels on Freeview/DTT when space is so limited.

Can you elaborate as to which channels are actually missing that could have made use of that space?

Maybe not what's missing, but is it not reducing the overall picture quality of the other channels on the mux?

And it's saving space for future use for the PSBs too.

I guess the next step will be a HD-switchover, especially if these new HD muxes are handed to the mobile companies. By my calculations there are currently 56 SD streams on Freeview (inc the two on the new HD mux) and 11 HD streams (with potential to rise to 1Cool. I guess that could be accomodate across 6 muxes (seems to be 3 SD channels to a HD one) if all switched encoding, and indeed as that would enable SD simulcasts to be scrapped that would release another mux for either 6 HD channels or 15-18 SD channels too.

Well the announcer just completely spoiled the outcome in the intro to Today at Wimbledon - although I don't think anyone was too shocked by that defeat. Unless he was talking about Kyrgios.

Benidorm - Rolf Harris references (cut from ITV +1)

Well it's on demand which is more the question - when viewers are actively seeking out episodes is it right to remove one completely.

Kind of worked out well today as they've been able to show all 4 quarter finals, picking up from key points in each match. And all over in time for Today at Wimbledon too - if Inverdale even bothers turning up anymore.

Benidorm - Rolf Harris references (cut from ITV +1)

I do hate the idea of rewriting history due to such events and effectively banning the broadcast of shows the culprit doesn't really have a claim over. It's a tricky one and they'll never be a right answer - it's one thing never rebroadcasting Animal Hospital but another not broadcasting an episode because it featured a song in a brief moment or a couple of jokes.

I think it was mainly seen as insensitive since it was so soon after his ruling. Benidorm is a comedy, and it's a lot less entertaining and comfortable to watch when it has so many obvious references to someone who is currently at the top of the headlines.

Quite true and it was unfortunate. So difficult though to go through everything before it goes to air (as a repeat especially) just to check - a Benidorm repeat on paper is fairly harmless filler.

The Return of The Big Breakfast - New Video P9

Well considering how famous the house is I think it's obvious they knew where the windows were. The frame of the old balcony door was always quite obvious on the brick house when they put the two smaller windows in.

Don't really get the logic in the lower windows on the right - and think the house now shows why they quite quickly dropped the black windows after 1996 and returned to the white frames broken into squares.

Not really. I'm not sure I've watched it at all since taking a peak during it's opening days (mainly for the idents) - and everytime I've missed something on C4 and gone to see if it's on 4seven it seems that it's either already been shown or they don't have the rights.

Forgotten how annoying channel changes are. Although I think BBC1 is right to take the Djokovic match at this point they could have cut short their inquest a bit earlier and joined it at the beginning of the tie break rather than ditching it midway through the tiebreak on BBC2 to have an inquest there as well.

London Live

Is that the one with the bloke from Neighbours from the days when Casualty didn't air 55 weeks a year!

I think the draw has dictated it - and certainly made today's schedule far more interesting than it otherwise would be. Wawrinka v Federer should be a cracker in it's own right so in a way quite glad that'll be the evening match, though Murray v Dimitrov is the first match this tournament where I expect Murray to be challenged and I think it's fairly evenly balanced.

They could do with something similar to the mini-MOTD on the sports app.

This week kind of shows though why perhaps they haven't opted for a 10.35pm show on BBC1, although that said any night they couldn't show it on BBC1 due to football it could air at 11.20pm on BBC2 - as indeed it used to if it was displaced.

The last couple of days have really needed a round up programme too thanks to the packed schedule and some shock results.
