I guess the next step will be a HD-switchover, especially if these new HD muxes are handed to the mobile companies. By my calculations there are currently 56 SD streams on Freeview (inc the two on the new HD mux) and 11 HD streams (with potential to rise to 1
. I guess that could be accomodate across 6 muxes (seems to be 3 SD channels to a HD one) if all switched encoding, and indeed as that would enable SD simulcasts to be scrapped that would release another mux for either 6 HD channels or 15-18 SD channels too.
