Piers Morgan to leave GMB

ITV have had an early morning bulletin since last year as the first half hour of GMB - would be absolutely dumb to introduce one at 5.30am as well. ITV aren't too concerned about how the 6-7am hour rates - it's 7-9am that is important.

"Channel of the Year"

Ah, spotted August when I searched for "BBC Two Channel of the Year", didn't spot 2012. Very Happy

"Channel of the Year"

A dilemma now for the BBC - BBC1 has now been named Channel of the Year. That is "RTS Channel of the Year". Will they add it to their lockdown idents - only time will tell.

The problem is they're already saying BBC2 is "Channel of the Year" with a badly positioned tag on the BBC2 idents. Now you can't have two BBC channels both saying they're "Channel of the Year" surely, even if technically they both are, with BBC2 getting the Edinburgh award last August.

Presumably they'll have to qualify it with the correct prefixes - easy enough for the RTS, not so much for the "Edinburgh International Television Festival Channel of the Year" - although sadly I see them opting to slap that across the BBC2 idents (probably on one line!) rather than simply opt not to include the claim on either.

The Circle

I wouldn't be surprised if the Netflix money is what secured them that permanent base. That said it may have been short sighted as I think with Netflix having non-UK rights there have only been three versions so far and you can't help but think if they'd gone the more traditional route it would have sold around the world and maybe bought in more money in the long run, plus also gets producers a foot in the door in countries where the production company may not have sold their formats. Indeed in hindsight not being able to sell the most covid friendly reality show to broadcasters suspending production on more traditional formats last year probably cost them a fortune.

I do agree with Jonwo though that I think Netflix would pick up the UK version as well should C4 axe it or opt not to write a blank cheque to keep it.

Downing Street Briefing Room

I wonder how much the Covid Briefing Room cost - what is that room used for normally?

Surely with most comedians not having the opportunity to perform over the last year concentrating on live comedy in the late night slot would have been a better use of the time.

That sounds like a good idea in principle, but maybe something to try as a separate celebration of live performance once packed audiences are allowed in one packed space again? Live comedy and standup with no audience tends to fall very flat and may have reflected unfairly on the performers, so just putting together a more straightforward "show" probably makes more sense in this instance.

Yes, that's the trouble. Obviously you could have the comics being each others audience but how that would work in practice I'm not sure.

The alternative would be a load of sketches but that would be significantly more expensive.

The Circle

Although I suspect it picks up with catch up and streaming, it's overnights are pretty poor really - just 850k last night. Deserves so much more IMO.

That said it is also a show that perhaps unlike Big Brother and I'm a Celeb is still quite watchable long after it has aired. Like a few others I only watched the first series after the second, and even though I knew who won the show is under the radar enough for you not to know how it plays out or the boot order.

The main series moves to 10pm where it may do a bit better, but I think the worrying thing for C4 is they have huge overnight ratings for shows like Gogglebox and Bake Off but really struggle to launch anything off the back of them.

ITV SD regions are closing

Long overdue. (Worthy of a new thread surely!)

Channel 4 - 40th Anniversary Designs

The over zealous watermark completely ruins these (quite arrogant really - don't recall any previous mockers doing anything like that over the last 20 years).

That said they aren't bad at all. We had a glimpse with It's a Sin but you've shown a little bit more how giving C4 it's colour back really could work moving forward - the menu is very effective and to be honest the white version and endboards/break bumpers are beginning to look a bit tired now, so adding the coloured blocks to them could refresh them nicely.

I wouldn't go through the 40 years of branding though for the 40th birthday - actually as they seem to bring out the 80s ident so often now it feels lazy rather than special so I'd rather they did something new for the event, building something from the current look. A long time ago but back in 1997 C4 had a completely different set of idents for "4 is 15".

Quite. If you're showing off £2.6 million of TV studio then at least remove the vacuum cleaner before you show it off to the world!

I think you'll find that's the new Home Secretary.

Well they are on the far right.

They tended to have original content longer into the night too, whilst Children in Need would start repeating things after 11pm or so.
