BBC Newsnight

I've only just noticed it this week - but is Newsnight shorter than it used to be? It's finishing at five past eleven rather than quarter past or twenty past.

Sky News: Presenters & Rotas

DTV posted:

Do Sky keep her on for pure comedic value because she is a terrible interviewer, they have much better presenters and she throws up several embarrassing stories a year.

Presumably Sky a) rate her and b) like the attention she gets. Whilst I'm not her biggest fan, I don't dislike her as much as some others appear to do. She certainly gets a lot of press and keeps the Sky News profile high up the agenda.

Bradby at Ten

Doesn't the autumn 'season' usually start at the beginning of September? After the kids go back to school and the summer holidays are over? I'd assume the 'new' News at Ten will begin then. It'll be interesting to see how distinctive they'll make it. The current NaT looks like any other bog standard ITV News bulletin. Presumably the Tom Bradby version will look quite a bit different from the other bulletins?

BBC Election 2015

Slightly random question, but is Kate Silverton now gone for good?

Dunno. Good question. Maternity leave again?

ITV News Election 2015

Just me who thinks it looks really nice, what was everyone expecting? It fits in well with the ITV news brand. Simple yet effective set design.

I don't think anyone's arguing that it deviates from the main ITV News brand or that it isn't a well designed set. It just comes across as underwhelming considering the scale of ITV's efforts on previous election nights (and those of the other broadcasters this year). Even 2010's dark and moody set still gave the impression of a sense of occasion.

Oh well, I suppose it's not right to judge everything from a screenshot - so I look forward to seeing it all in action next week...

Everything you say is fair enough, but, as others have stated, what's the point in ITV spending big money on a bespoke, one-off set, when most people will just be watching the Beeb on election night?

International News Presentation: Past and Present

I've got such a huge affection for both TVB and ATV. Their English language news operations are tiny - but they really try ever so hard to provide a reasonable service for the expat and international viewer in Hong Kong. Sad to hear about ATV.

The 'Victoria Derbyshire' Programme

In a seemly desperate move, the first hour of the Victoria Derbyshire programme will be simulcast on Radio 5 Live on April 13th.

I'm only vaguely aware of the 5 Live schedule - but doesn't Nicky Campbell have that slot? He does an hour on his own after the end of the Breakfast show? Will Deebyshire replace this?

ITV News

In light of David Cameron's announcement of his intention to not serve a third term, were the Tories to win the election, I trust Tom Bradby will correctly source the information to the BBC? I know he's a real stickler for these things.

London Live

I think the plight of London Live is yet more proof that this whole local television idea is doomed to failure. It just won't work. I'm not exactly sure why it can't work here (various major US cities have been able to sustain local channels) but it just can't.

You're making the mistake the press does of thinking all the local TV stations are like London Live. That and writing them off after such short a time.... it's early days. London Live made the mistake of trying to serve a very specific niche audience rather than being a local channel.

I don't think they'll all be a roaring success, but to say they're doomed isn't really fair

Well, we'll see, I suppose. I still think the idea's a non-starter...but time will tell.

That being said, I'm perfectly content for some Russian oligarch to pour millions of quid down the drain trying to make the thing work...

RTS News Awards

Interesting Sky News scooping News channel of the Year. Nothing against the channel at all (infact I watch Sunrise over BBC Breakfast) - but the BBC News channel would have been my choice in terms of well-rounded journalism, reporting and presentation during the last 12 months. I've always wondered what the judging criteria in the News channel of the Year category is.

The RTS seem to loathe the BBC News Channel. I think it's only ever won the best news channel award once.
