Sky News presentation - New studio onwards

I think it's a shame they didn't use the opportunity presented by the new studio to change the on air graphics.

Graphics that are barely more than a year old?

The graphics are the best part. This Sky look has really grown on me. Sure, the end of the top of the hour sequence could use a little more oomph, but I think it otherwise looks great. The custom fullscreens, video wall graphics, and the graphs/maps/charts are really impressive.

Well, it's all personal taste I suppose. You like the graphics, I think they're pretty ropey.

Mark Austin leaves ITN

Well Jon Snow has to retire eventually.

I've always reckoned Matt Frei was tapped up to replace Jon Snow, hence him joining Channel 4 News. Although this is pure speculation on my part and isn't backed up by any supporting evidence.

US Presidential Election 2016

It's interesting that they've gone with Andrew Neil and Katty Kay. I know traditionally Dimbleby has presented these things, but I assumed Huw Edwards would replace him (as he's expected to do with UK elections).

Also, from the press release, it looks like the output will be simulcast on television and radio? Is that right, or have I just misread it?

BBC News | Presenter & Correspondent Reshuffles

NYTV posted:
Martin Bashir Appointed Religious Affairs Correspondent replacing Caroline Wyatt

Blimey, that came out of nowhere. I vaguely recall that he wasn't around on US telly much these days, but I didn't know he was coming back to the UK. Has he got some particular interest in religious affairs?

The reason Bashir wasn't on US telly is because he was suspended by his last employer, MSNBC over his response to Sarah Palin's
comments she made comparing the US Federal debt to slavery. "Bashir attempted to counter Palin's comparison by referencing the punishment of slaves described by slave overseer Thomas Thistlewood, specifically a punishment called "Derby's dose" which involved forcing slaves to defecate or urinate into the mouth of another slave as punishment. Bashir then concluded by saying "if anyone truly qualified for a dose of discipline from Thomas Thistlewood, she would be the outstanding candidate." He was suspended a month later and resigned two days after the suspension started. He also was suspended at ABC News for disparaging comments he made about his colleagues (which included Nightline presenter Juju Chang)

I vaguely remember some kerfuffle about Sarah Palin - but I didn't know the details. He's quite a big name to be doing a fairly low-profile job like religious affairs. Are the Beeb trying to raise the profile of the subject, I wonder?

Sky News 2015 new look

5 News editor Cristina Nicolotti Squires is joining Sky News as Director of Content in January.

It says in that report that she'll be in charge of all output. Well what will John Ryley be doing? Isn't that his job? Honestly, Sky News must be getting as bad as the BBC, what with all these different managers, doing the same job.

Christina is essentially taking on the role that John McAndrew left earlier this year.

Which still feels like two people to do the same job. If McAndrew was head of output, and his replacement will do the same, what's Ryley doing? Sky News is not that big an operation - how many bosses does it need?

London Live

I suppose the argument will be that rather than stretch out what they have to fill the hours, they can commit to making the hours they cover news better. Thing is, it's impossible to regulate that.

I'm just struggling to see the point of the station in general, however. It has a very prominent position on Freeview because of the public service commitments it agreed to. If the owners feel like running a station full of repeats then by all means join the queue and launch on channel 89.

Now people might say ITV retains a prominent position despite cutting local programming to the bone. Difference is, people would miss ITV if it disappeared. Can anyone say that about London Live?

The short answer is 'no', no one would miss it. They should just pull the plug on this misguided experiment and close all these local channels down. They are a complete and utter waste of time and money.

Labour Leadership

DJGM posted:

A two hour special on something more predictable than a Zimbabwean Election.
The fallout should be quite messy though.

And the Tories are loving every minute of Labour ripping itself to shreds and becoming more of an irrelevant left wing protest group, rather than anything even resembling a viable party of opposition. What an utterly pathetic shambles!

Careful, the Corbynistas are all over the place online, and they are fanatical.

BBC News Channel Presentation - 21/03/16 onwards

There was something a bit weird about Sunday's late news. They headlined a story about American footballers protesting the US national anthem - but there wasn't a report - just an out of vision read. Which is weird. Did a vt not make its slot or something?

London Live

I've said it before and no doubt I'll say it again. These local channels don't work in the UK and won't work. London Live can relaunch and relaunch - and it won't make a jot of difference. Just write it off and close it down.
