I caught the end of the Evening News with Julie trailing the News at Ten, telling us to tune in to find out which famous voice could soon be coming out of 'sat navs'. Despite the heavy hint that Julie gave I don't think Mary was then supposed to tell us that it didn't sound like Bob Dylan. It's possible that she just couldn't help herself.

As for Mark, I still think he works best with Katie. On the occasions that I have seen him with Julie they seem to get on quite well but I'm not yet convinced that's relaxed and entirely genuine.

Just Been Comfirmed By The Lady Herself: Alex Hyndman Is Leaving

That's a surprise as I wouldn't expect Katie to present London Tonight every day, (she'll be presenting the Evening News twice next week for example). Presumably that means we'll see more of Lucy Cotter.

Maybe Katie will do every LN and maybe present London Tonight for 2 or 3 bulletins a week.

That's pretty much what I would expect, once everything has settled down.

So is Katie reutning to London Tonight and is Alex Leaving.

Though she has been presenting the Evening News a lot recently Katie never officially left London Tonight, and reggieB's information has proved correct so far, so it's reasonable to expect her to continue as the main presenter alongside Matt Teale. I'm sure there will also continue to be a regular need for cover so wouldn't expect Alex to leave.

Theoretically the only change to Katie's role would be an expansion of her responsibilities on the Lunchtime News.
Hopefully she will present the Lunchtime News four/five days a week and return to presenting London Tonight on a more regular basis (just a shame that it's not still with Alastair).

There isn't really the need for both Romilly and Nina to provide ocassional cover for Katie, Mary and Julie so I would expect them to present more regularly at the weekends. Of the two I'd prefer to see Romilly during the week as I rarely watch the weekend bulletins.

I don't think you'll see Alastair on London Tonight again. Strong rumours he's to take over the Evening News sometime in September.

Well he'll probably continue to present London Tonight now and again until then, but if he does make the move hopefully that'll mean Katie takes on the extra Lunchtime News shifts (or joins Alastair on the Evening News Very Happy).

It's surprising how many programmes on the BBC are produced by independent companies but The Proms is a BBC Productions production (if that makes sense Wink).

As for the classical music, I'm sure Katie would class it as a hobby but she has a radio show on Classic FM and, I believe, achieved grade 8 on the piano and violin when at school so could comfortably claim to know a damn sight more than me about it.

I would imagine it's the clear distinction between the roles that allows Katie to do both.
Though first and foremost a newsreader she does have a longstanding association with classical music and has presented a couple of Proms in the past, rather well as I recall, so it's good that she is able to continue with that.

(As you can tell I'm not down at the Royal Albert Hall, but I will be watching on BBC 2.)

By the way does Mary still work for ITN?

Occasionally Wink . Summer holidays I suspect, the EPG is showing her back next week.

so not the place for too much friendly chatting

They did from time to time at the end

The odd comment after a light-hearted item certainly, but never anything that would equate to an informal 'chat'.
When, as was the case with the Lunchtime News, they are genuine asides I think such comments add to the character of the bulletin and, as long as it were never to become part of the running order, long may they continue.

I agree that the national news isn't a magazine programme so not the place for too much friendly chatting, but I don't think we've ever had that on the Lunchtime News; it's more a case of Katie and Alastair being very much at ease with and having confidence in each other so when they present together everything flows along serenely.
Undoubtedly a single presenter gives the bulletin a more workmanlike feel, it's just that I don't think that was required.

In general I prefer ITV News bulletins to those on the BBC (whose website I turn to far more than their broadcasts). I just think that the typical News at Ten programme doesn't appeal quite as much as it should, particularly given the apparent emphasis placed on it.

Also, I agree that copying the BBC's News at Ten is not the way to go.
