ITV News

Although ITV News has been improving lately, the earlier bulletins still include some opinionated language and emotive stuff, whereas NaT has much less of it. You don't have to agree, Alex! Wink

Very Happy
Just as well because on the strength of today's programmes that's not going to happen.
Tonight Julie led with what could be seen as a jingoistic report about British workers at oil refineries in the UK being told to work harder or face getting the sack.
The item had clearly been held back for a News at Ten 'exclusive', which was good as it meant that on the lunchtime and evening bulletins we were spared what truly was a nonentity of a report.
I also find the continual emphasis on it being the News at Ten , sometimes shoehorned in several times in a single report, counterproductive (verging on laughable) as it hardly speaks of confidence in their identity.

I think the perception of quality comes from some of their more in-depth pieces, such as the 'On Assignment' report by an American journalist in Afghanistan, which was interesting, but I still find the bulletin un-engaging and if I want to see the news at that time will usually opt for the BBC.

I am pretty sure they'll cut back to 1 presenter.

Well they have cut back to one presenter. They didn't make much fuss over the change so it's possible that they'll return to a two presenter format, but I'm not expecting them to.

It works with just one but I'm still of the opinion that the 'friendlier' feel of two presenters, particularly when it was Katie and Alastair together, was right for the Lunchtime News.
If anything the slightly soulless style of the News at Ten means that would be the bulletin most suited to having a single presenter.

p.s. I bet the BBC had fun putting together the 'Black Horse' train graphic for their News at Ten.

It was only vague in so much as it didn't mention whether it was an ITV News special, which is a detail that isn't of interest to most people.

I also disagree with the received wisdom that the NaT is of a higher quality than the other bulletins. It has a slightly different focus but I prefer the Lunchtime News and Evening News programmes.
I do agree though that the news programming on ITV is as strong as ever, despite increased competition and less than ideal scheduling - of the three main bulletins the Evening News enjoys the most fortunate place in that schedule.

Indeed you have.
I find single-headed bulletins can be a bit perfunctory, particularly when compared with some of the more established partnerships we have on ITV News such as Katie and Alastair's, but as long as Katie continues to present the news I'll continue to watch. Otherwise I'd stick to on-line sources.

ITV Lunchtime News will move to a solo anchor as of Monday, with Katie and Alastair alternating. More news to follow.

that's a shame - I always like their banter!

Yes, that would be a shame. I like the current format.

The EPG and Radio Times are showing Katie and Alastair from Monday to Thursday, and Katie and Steve Scott on Friday. (Katie is also presenting the Evening News all week Cool ).

News at Ten - Weeknights on ITV1

That was almost certainly a technical problem.

Yes, your speculation that someone cued up the wrong recording fits well with events, including that it was allowed to run for as long as possible to compensate for the fact that it was quite a bit shorter than the intended titles and the fractionally late fading up of the microphones.
It didn't phase Mark or Katie though Smile.

News at Ten - Weeknights on ITV1

I suspect they changed the start either because ITV is running a little late or, more probably, because the studio requirements of the Mission to the Moon programme precluded the use of the usual opening shot, (or is that programme pre-recorded so not an issue?).

I heard that he's a bit deaf in one ear.

OK, I'll shout then...

BREKKIE, I THINK IT'S TO DO WITH THE RELATIVE HEIGHTS OF THE PRESENTERS Wink
and camera angles giving the illusion of the person on the right appearing a little taller, as Alastair sits on the left when presenting with Nina.

Dec's the smaller one - I always think of it as Dec ' is small like an ant' !! ( not confusing at all!!) Very Happy

Thanks.

In 17 of the 18 pictures on the first page of a Google image search that feature both of them they're standing the right way round, with Ant on the left Very Happy.

I still don't know which one's which out of Ant and Dec.
Their career following Byker Grove really has been quite astonishing.

Less surprising is that some of the actors and actresses from Press Gang have been successful (such as Julia Sawalha and Gabrielle Anwar, in case it wasn't immediately apparent who I was talking about).

Talking of news related stuff; as BBCNicky presumed, Katie and Alastair did present Wednesday's Lunchtime News (as well as Monday and Tuesday's Evening News programmes).

I recall Nina Hossain sat to his left on LT in the past. Confused

...I think there lies the key.
(Please note that I have studiously avoided any height based puns Wink)

The cameras have been arranged such that shots from the right-hand side of the studio predominate, which has the effect of making the presenter slightly closer to the camera appear a little taller in relation to his or her colleague. Obviously the effect is less significant now that they're permanently seated on the national news as those chairs are height adjustable.
