BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

Cando posted:
Personally I would have thought News Channel presenters would have been more well known than BBC London staff, but there you go!

(Before News 24 started, I would have thought a fair number of presenters would be known from reporting on the 'standalone' bulletins!)

No way. I think people on here don't realise how few watch either the BBC or Sky News Channels on a daily basis in the UK in a normal news week.
Head presenter on BBC London News is a big gig. Ask Emily Maitlis. The 6.30pm bulletin gets 500k -800k depending on the time of year. An hour on the BBC NC during the day and evening is lucky to get 100-130k. Also worth noting that Riz often does the national 7.57pm BBC One bulletin.

"Ask Emily Maitlis" - what's to ask? If it was such a big gig, why would she have left the programme to join NC? I have to disagree with you; presenting on the NC means that the presenter is more likely to present national bulletins, unlike a regional newscaster.

BBC National/News Channel from New Broadcasting House

Are there any websites where you can see the audience viewing figures/ratings for different times of the day on NC?

There is BARB which can tell you some weekly and monthly ratings information and there is also a ratings thread on the digitalspy forums which sometimes report and discuss BBC News Channel ratings. However it is quite rare for them to discuss the BBC News channel unless there is a big news story. They do however receive hourly ratings info for BBC One and ITV.

Thanks.

I think it is also important to commend the BBC's coverage as well. Simon has been on top form, giving us the facts, whilst being full of banter throughout. Jane hill, Joanna gosling were also great outside Buckingham palace. But one person in particular showed just how much she deserved her own slot, and that was Annita McVeigh. Lets hope they'll start using her for more national bulletins now.

Sorry I whole heartedly disagree with you, yes Simon McCoy as had a few comedy moments, but the mess ups last night and tonight just show that ITV won it hands down....

Most of the problems last night wernt his doing, ITV had more slip ups last night e.g adbreakgate

Bbc will always come out on top because they have the advantage of a news channel, which they can just opt-into as they please. BBC coverage, I thought, was on top form. Mistakes are bound happen in a special.

BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

It's really interesting watching newswatch, and then comparing how the presenters present thereafter. For example, a viewer said there was no reference to Ireland, Scotland, and Wales in the domestic news. Funnily enough, in the weather bulletin, there was a reference to these three countries, without mentioning England, within 10 seconds. A viewer also said that there was too much 'chit-chat' between newsreaders and weather presenters. Was there much conversation between the newscaster and the weather presenter? No.

It's really good to see that the BBC listens to what the viewers think, and it's a shame newswatch is taking a summer break!

I find the show odd - so many people spend their time writing angry over-dramatic letters to BBC News to complain the studio is too red and the presenters read things too slowly. It amazes me people get worked up over such tiny things and I wish the BBC wouldn't listen to them or even air their silly comments.

Some of the points raised though are realistic, like the dual anchors finishing each others sentences. Though I support dual anchors to increase diversity etc, they could just take it in turns instead of finishing each others line.

Are there any sports bulletins at 1930 on the news channel? There never seems to be any, but surely this must be one of the most watched times on the channel?

T Given that the 'prime' slots now use presenters well known to domestic viewers (Sopel, Alagiah, Badawi), I wonder if you might even see someone like Kate Silverton get an afternoon slot...

Badawi is well known to UK viewers?
Kate Silverton would be great but I prefer her presenting GMT and not Impact.

Although she doesn't venture across to domestic BBC News often, she was previously a regular presenter on Channel 4 News. She's also filled in on the Andrew Marr Show (a high profile role) and is a semi-regular on Hardtalk.

Of course any new presenter might not be presenting Impact - a new programme will follow Global, presumably with the handover, but it's nothing more than an assumption that Impact will live on in its current form.

She also presents World News Today, which is broadcast to UK viewers. She also occasionally presented on the NC.

^ Thanks. With those hours it's impossible to stay on World afternoon schedule.

So she probably would stay with Impact; she'll just have the day off when she did Today in the morning. With Lucy Hockings as relief, there shouldn't be a problem.

Mishal Husain joins R4's Today programme

They could have World: Have your Say replace it? They could do a daily edition of that instead of it being on world service. Or, they could put back Global and then extend Lucy and Ros' alternating shift? That's if she leaves, there's no sign of that.

Please, Adam, no. WHYS is on tv once a week. I feel that's enough. Daily on radio, though.

Mishal Husain: a welcome addition to the Today team. Contrary to what most people believe, being given a role on Today is quite a significant thing. It's very much considered a promotion in broadcasting circles, given that Today is generally held in high esteem by a large part of the broadcasting and audience fraternity. Good luck to Mishal on Today. I believe she'll prove to be quite a revelation. Today is the flagship radio programme on the BBC.

I also expect her to continue broadcasting the BBC National News though, Six, Ten and weekends occasionally, similar to Sian Williams.

Wow. It's ages since Mishal started off on our World screens in the late 90's as a business presenter on World Business Report, alongside Peter Coe, Teymoor Nabili, Owen Thomas, Anna Jones, Patrick O'Connell and Adrian Finighan. She then moved on to become an occasional weekend newsreader, before getting more regular Newsreading slots on BBC World. Thereafter, she's worked across the entire BBC News and Current Affairs output, presenting everything from Newsnight to News at Ten to Olympics to Royal Weddings and Elections. As such, she is probably quite well qualified for the Today role. Good luck!

With regard to her replacement on Impact, Lucy Hockings is possibly the most logical choice, but I would like to see some others being considered as well. Karin Giannone, for example, is deserving of her own fixed slot after several years across the roster. David Eades is another good example, although having him back to back with Soapy probably won't sit well with some sectors.

Peter Dobbie also a very capable pair of hands. Babita Sharma or Kasia Madera: both also great choices.

Let's not forget Naga Munchetty! Maybe keen to move from the 5am slot, although that would possibly eliminate her as Breakfast cover on Sundays.

There's a few people I certainly wouldn't like to see................

Anyway, good on Mishal!

Why would it eliminate Naga from doing breakfast? They could give the slot to a NC newsreader, like Emil Maitlis. Now that would be a good handover to global Smile
