CNN International & Domestic

I think when you start having features called "What I Learned on the Internets" you really need to take a look at your content.

I think the whole point of New Day for CNN is that they have taken a serious look at what they offer, and re-evaluated their raison d'etre. Jeff Zucker has spoken extensively about CNN's new direction being one in which the definition of "news" is somewhat enlarged. You only have to look at programs like 'The Lead' to see this new approach in action. I'm certain Zucker and Jim Murphy would argue that, for the lucrative younger demographic their attempting to target, titbits from the "internets" are genuine news items in their own right. They are stories talked about as much as last night's Miami Heat victory.

I know what you're getting at Scottishtv (I'm not trying to defend CNN; I'd level a similar critique at New Day), but I wanted to make the point that New Day is the result of six months of careful planning; CNN's new direction.

As for my own opinion; I am mixed on New Day. As a pres fan I LOVE features like the James Earl Jones voice-over. The way he says 'Pereira' is simply perfect! Michaela is, for me, the real star of the show; an absolute professional who 'anchors' the broadcast. She has warmth and character without appearing overly caffeinated.

Though I admit the wider mix of stories will appeal to a broader audience (and probably lead to higher ratings), I just can't help but mourn the loss of in-depth interviews Soledad O'Brien proved she had the chops to deliver time and time again. We're clearly not going to see any of that on New Day. If only Starting Point had benefited the same editorial focus and quality production values that make New Day so slick - if a little too slick.
