It's odd that Granada retained the word Reports after the 2011 rebrand, considering that all (?) other ITV plc regions lost any words after the region name (such as Tonight or Live) at that time, despite such words also being long-standing parts of programme identities.

If the current name was resolutely just plain old "ITV News Granada" (i.e. actually sodding well in-line with other regions), then the desire/need to avoid clunkiness by breaking this up into "This is ITV News, you're watching Granada Reports" (or similar) wouldn't even arise.

Of course, at least one other region has since broken ranks with the supposed total consistently at some point after 2011 too (with the revival of the "Wales at 6" name, which therefore also warrants being broken up a la Granada).

It was something to do with how the Granada Reports name has been engrained into the subconscious of the residents of Granadaland, in the same way I imagine "Calendar" is to Yorkshire folk. Granada was one of the more cherished regional identities, and I think somebody in charge felt it was sacrilegious to abandon the name completely in favour of "ITV News North West" or something.

Well it would be ITV News Granada, which would be fine. For me personally (and many of my generation) Granada Reports is a name that came about in the early 2000s as Granada Tonight got worse and worse.

It is far from the exception to the rule though with the 2013 revamp - Lookaround and Calendar also remain, whilst others like Tyne Tees and Anglia are about emphasising the historic regional brand.

Didn't it originally come from the Emmerdale Woolpack set, pitched as people talking about politics in the pub?

Not The Woolack set but the old YTV bar which is the present Calendar set. The punters discussed political issues before MPs responded in London.

When the rebound happened there was a Meridian van with 'Meridian Reports' on the side. Makes you wonder if they intended to apply '...Reports' to every region.

Which is ironic given the Granada SNGs had 'Granada News' on the side!

Was that when ITV plc rushed into a hedonistic relationship with a far younger lover, following an acrimonious divorce from their spouse of many years? Wink

The Granada "Party People" name mentioned before - was that supposed to be a Madchester-style pun?

I always thought it was just political party people rather than any further meaning, but it's possible. Once it moved to the late Thursday slot it did sit slightly oddly in the schedule though, it doesn't really say what the programme is/was about and sounded like something else entirely.

I think Party People is a connection to Factory Records, the legendary Manchester music label and a playful pun on Granada's part.

And lets not forget at the heart of both Factory Records and Granada TV during this period was Anthony Wilson!

Saying that, though, the previous name to Party People was "The Spin" which Granada kindly dropped when BBC also had a political programme with the same name, although, if I remember correctly, Granada's The Spin was first.

I'm pretty sure 'ITV News Granada Reports' is just the logo. The Twitter/Facebook pages are still 'ITV Granada Reports' and it's usually introduced as 'This is ITV News, you're watching Granada Reports'.

Yes, although for a while after the 2013 rebrand it was introduced as "ITV News Granada Reports".

Not as bad as "ITV News Channel TV". Presumably the "TV" is there so it doesn't sound like a news channel, but surely they could've kept the "Channel Report" name in the same way as Granada.

Of course Anglia had been "Anglia News" before it was "Anglia Tonight" and before that "About Anglia" in the 80s.

Tyne Tees had been "North East Tonight" since the 1996 C3NE revamp, but was "Tyne Tees News" before that, and earlier "Northern Life".
