According to a friend who worked there, the playout kit in Leeds at the time was older than London's and couldn't cope with such short pieces of VT, and so northern regions didn't get the break flashes.

I remember that given as a reason at the time, on these very forums. The Northern Transmission Centre was a decade old and had been extended to take on more regions, and the kit couldn't take 0.5second files.

I can remember about that time, a tender for a playout system for a European broadcaster (no one in the UK before you all start guessing) and it specified in the list of essential requirements that it had to be capable of playing stings as short as 12 frames

Will it be at 9.15 ? or later ?

When we moved onto compiling them onto VT, or using the big automated 2 inch carousels for ads, would you go to the increased effort ( and more, would the tech cope with short bursts of another video, and back again?)

Whereas half a second of black between ads was easy, it was just a case of moving the start time code of the advert back by 12 frames.

Is the rebrand even confirmed for tomorrow? Or are we working purely on speculation?

It's all speculation but with a few leaks which back it up.

It could all just be a ploy to get the prized TV presentation fan demographic watching The X Files.

I can't help but feel Channel 5 would make a little noise over the whole thing.

I'm on the press list and haven't heard anything yet.

Advertisers have been ditching those slots in the Superbowl all week for 9pm on C5 tomorrow night.

Was the "black" in between adverts a conscious design choice? I always assumed it was technical restrictions given they don't have them anymore, but with dbl claiming only certain regions had "black" as opposed to an ITV1 break flash, I'm wondering if it was intentional.

I'm not sure if it was ever intentional per se. My understanding of how it used of the momentary pause was just that, to allow a break between advert to advert. Not sure when the breakflash was introduced on ITV, but it was only on the regions that were controlled by London.

I think Sky were the first in the UK who had no pauses between adverts as that was the first time I saw that and was quite surprised by it. It's normal now though.

I liked Channel 5's initial flash, minimal and effective.

Thinking about the pre-ITV1 era, didn't it used to be the case that the break would start with a breakbumper (the spinning chevron with a flash of light going round it from the late 90s is the one I can mostly remember), but at the end the last advert would have a long hold, with no bumper.

Speculation. Not long to wait now to see if true or not.

Yes, that's about right. There was never a bumper at the end of the ads - the final frame of the last ad was held for 2-3 seconds then usually faded (rather than cut) to black before the next trailer/continuity or the programme recommenced.

Back in the 90s and before, each advert would normally freeze frame at the end for about 1 second, with the final ad freezing/holding for longer. This was documented in the routine sheets I've seen, with the ad lengths showing as 30" (+1"), 20" (+3") etc. I suppose the final advertiser in the break therefore had their product/caption on screen slightly longer which may have worked in their favour!

A lot of ITV regions had adverts on in different areas too. So I guess these had to line up before the trailers/continuity. It was certainly rather noticeable on Granada during the glorious GMG North days.
