thejules - could I suggest some attribution to that cut and paste job?
I think it's from today's Sunday Times. It's a Focus piece, i.e. a huge page advert for itv. It's gone in my recycling bin already.
It smacks of arrogance and desperation: "Please watch me and give me a chance. I'm good, you know."
Arrogance and bitterness combined.
Do they think pieces like this will make audiences watch - or are they just trying to have digs at BBC News in the hope the public/politicians will support a weakened BBC? If that's the case then they can hardly accuse the BBC of being cynical...
Tom is great the new Trevor or Burnett great for itv's brand. NaT already seems to be getting a ratings boost too!
I'm a huge fan of ITN but even I wouldn't go that far! Burnet he most definitely is not!! The only people to have come close to Burnet in recent times are Alastair Stewart and John Suchet. Even Trevor wasn't that great, in my opinion. He was a competent newscaster but didn't have the relaxed, innate on air skills of Suchet or Stewart. Bradby isn't even in the same league - he's probably one of the worst newscasters ITN has ever had. I'd even rather watch Mark Austin and I've never been a big fan of his either. At least he doesn't come across as patronising and arrogant.
The show needed a fresh face and a new style Tom's got character and he's a personality he will improve after all the guy's only been in the job a matter of weeks! Most contributors would agree that he's settling down into the role.

It also suits the agenda of The Murdoch Sunday Times, of course, in painting the BBC as an all-too-dominant player.
"In the end, then, the brief from ITV was simple: don’t worry about the ratings, because we want a prestige product that is distinctive, innovative and at the top of its field in terms of world agenda."
"I would urge you to give us a try."
That sounds like they're not worrying about the ratings.

I gave the new News at Ten a try and I hated it, the problem is Bradby, nothing else

So you're not a fan of Tom then? How is he different from Trevor, Mark, Julie or anyone else? Alastair Stuart has quite an individual style and Burnett got involved editing the show like Tom so what's he doing wrong?

You cannot compare him to those ITN greats. They all had gravitas, something that Tom will never have. Oh and it's Alastair STEWART and Alastair BURNET
That is a much better piece than the one from a week or so ago and he is clearly well aware of the history and that News at Ten is in a position of it's own making. Sadly some people, including The Guardian only pick out the bits they want to read where he's whinging about the BBC rather than taking the whole thing in context.
Another piece in The Guardian too looking at it more from the BBC angle and how ITV have the advantage of not having the rolling news commitments of the BBC: https://t.co/AS5YQnZl9Z
The real test IMO will come next week with the launch of I'm a Celebrity. The bulletin has had six weeks to bed in now so it'll be interesting to see the year on year comparisons across the three weeks and whether the new style can appeal to the floating viewer when ITV has nearly 10m viewers leading in to it.
