Tonight's show was a stunner Bradby on top form and some great reports on ISIS & from Iran + from the coach crash in the Gironde in France ITV seem to be taking the News seriously again and throwing some money at it. I didn't see the BBC equivalent but I'm certain that ITN's product was far superior!

A Bond movie interupted by News at Ten. It's like the 90s all over again!

I was thinking that. I recall that, when a broadcast of another Bond film, "Die Another Day", started at 8:30 on a Friday in March 2012, it was also interrupted for News at Ten.

The conversational style works for me personally I think it's innovative.

Editorialisation has absolutely no place on PSB News, has to be straightforward reportage. I do not want 'a conversation' it's sloppy and also demeans the intelligent viewer. It also leads viewer analysis of the subject being discussed. The only valid reason for such reportage is where authorities want to impart information following incidents such a post plane crashes or other serious life ending calamities.

There is just so much wrong with what Bradby is arguing re BBC News. What if Sky news were to close one day? Would the BBC suddenly have to start up a rolling news channel again?! We all know the history of why the BBC moved their news to 10pm. Should they do their news at 9pm nightly with the exception of when ITV delay the news for football highlights?

This argument that the BBC should not tread on any commercial toes is a fallacy. In my view, the BBC provide the market leading news website and news bulletins. The News Channel targets a sloghtly different approach from the more tabloid Sky News. Of course I enjoy commercial media as well as the BBC. It shouldn't be either/or. Equally, it shouldn't be up to the BBC to plug a gap until commercial media plan to fill it.

Obviously Bradby comes from a position of bias (he's always worked within ITN, hasn't he? So he's never seen it from the opposite perspective) and I think the average punter would prefer the BBC to continue to provide their bulletins, their website and their news channel.

I agree with him on investing in Newsnight & on the news channel, close it down & broadcast a beefed up World in the UK.

I always preferred it when the BBC's main news was at 9 and ITV's at 10. But ITV isn't entirely without blame for the current situation LOL Wink

It wasn't always a case of the choice of watching the BBC at 9, or ITN at 10. 'Back in the day' <I actually hate that expression> the ratings for the two news programmes were driven by the programmes before and after them on BBC 1 and ITV. ITV's slot for top drawer programmes was 9pm to 10, the Beeb's 9:25 to 10:30/11 ish.

It seems more polarised now, people (myself included) will either watch BBC or ITN , and (because of non linear viewing) their choice is not dictated by other programme choices.
