Julie commented on Pauline Cafferkey's recovery as being "great news" and that they "wish her all the best". Very welcome sentiments, but sounded totally out of place on a news programme, regardless of which direction they're taking it in. Very strange.

Indeed, just like Tom last night "crossing his fingers" as she was "out of the woods" taking "steps in the right direction". Mixed metaphors aside, you have to wonder whether we're now to expect opinion on say, a critically injured criminal gunman in hospital, or a convicted terrorist ill with cancer (like al-Megrahi was).

It seems fairly usual for newsreaders to wish people well if suffering from an illness, but the new ITV News style seems to be very attached.

What was wrong with the voiceover last night, as seen in the following video:

I think it's the normal voiceover person but her manner of speaking seems different, and rather than 'This is ITV News at Ten with Julia Etchingham', it sounds more like 'This is ITV... News at Ten... With Julie Etchingham'.

EDIT: Looking back, it seems to be something that started on Monday, as Tom Bradby's voiceover then also has the awkward pauses.

Indeed, I do remember the ITV Nightly News and the subsequent return of News at Ten... That's why it's ironic that they never seem to learn from some of these basic mistakes.

Mind you, it's early days and I would imagine once Tom has found his feet and a proper relaunch has taken place then they will be keen to ensure it's News at Ten more often.

But it wasn't the proper News at Ten because it was ten minutes shorter, the Friday night late bulletin stayed at 11 (and actually was on at ten at least once but was called "the ITV Weekend News") and, even from Monday to Thursday, was often on later at 10 (I believe that you already know this but I'm just creating the context for my reply to you - please don't think that I'm insulting your intelligence).

The Evening News (the 6:30 bulletin) when it was prevented by Trevor McDonald was much better than the "News at When?" that was on from 2001 to 2004.

Everything flowed much better tonight. Less sensationalist or sentimentalist language too, which DOES give Bradby a touch more authority. Wasn't too keen on the shoe-horned studio discussion about Spectre though! Shocked

Seeing as they're now pushing the 'News at Ten' brand again, the pauses in the re-recorded voiceovers are perhaps deliberate.

Would probably be better if they went for "From ITV News this is News at Ten with..." That emphasises both brands then.

In the 90's, didn't the V/O say "From the studios of ITN, this is News at Ten, with Trevor McDonald"?
