Has anybody had a look at ratings for the last week, compared to the week before? Or are ratings for news not that useful?
They would be about the same as the last few months I imagine.
With the soft launch, ITV are clearly giving Tom time to develop before a rebrand in the New Year (with promotion). Then ITV will expect ratings to rise.
Generally a better performance. The first bulletin under the new format that I have almost enjoyed watching.
Still a few patronising comments....and in particular Bradby needs to stop the use of the words "Everyone thinks", "Everyone knows" etc. His editor should ban him from using the word "Everyone" in his links.
He also made a patronising derogatory comment amount Tim Farron and Liberal Democrats.........and I NEVER thought I would be posting a comment in defence of Lib Dems and Farron in particular. However this type of comment is unacceptable on a prime time news bulletin.
Also unhappy about his ad lib "Both of them family men of course" when referring to two soldiers killed in action. He is implying the tragedy would have been lesser if the killed did not have wives and children. Again unacceptable bigoted comments on a prime time news bulletin.
Julie Etchingham fronting the bulletin tomorrow so a more professional approach anticipated.

...........or time to hang himself
[mod edit: as in "hung by his own petard"]
with one (or two) of ITN's excellent team of presenters taking the lead with the new look in the new year.

I can see the direction in which they're taking News at Ten and understand why they're doing it. The reporter packages are still top-notch ITV News journalism, and in honest terms, Tom Bradby really isn't the problem - it's the way the lead-ins are now written that is the real problem, and it was obvious even when Julie was hosting. It's been reported in this thread that they've given careful attention to what the newscaster says and they're aiming for a more relaxed feel. Given that News at Ten has been lauded recently in The Guardian as being more news-driven and engaging than the BBC's 10, and that Tom Bradby stated that the brief of the refreshed show was to build on these 'serious' and 'intelligent' concepts, I find it extraordinary that they've appeared to do a U-turn back to using such bizarrely dramatic intros with plenty of "heartbreaking"s and "shocking"s as in the Deborah Turness days. His presentation doesn't make me feel as if I'm watching something intelligent - it feels a touch sensationalist and patronising.
I do appreciate the Newsnight-style approach they're adopting and I'll continue to tune in... but I just don't really get Tom's scripts. He's solid but he's no Paxman, so they'd be best either toning it down or going back to basics.
The phrase is "hoist by one's own petard". An explosive device (a petard) has no chance of hanging anyone.

Tom said that Julie would be presenting tonight. Is there an arrangement whereby Tom won't present the bulletin if it isn't on at 10 on any night from Monday to Thursday and will present this week's Friday night bulletin, which is on at 10, instead?
I wonder if tonight's bulletin will still be in the new News at Ten style, or will just be like a normal ITV News bulletin without the emotional script etc.

I understand that the plan is for Julie to do one programme per week alternating Wednesday and Friday.
