I guess we can all argue over the merits of a hard versus soft launch (and perhaps this
should
have been hard), but as with any programme changes of this nature, it's going to be a gradual process. Experience shows us that viewers don't always respond positively to wholesale changes introduced overnight (just look at the various problems that have beset ITV Breakfast in recent years - first with Daybreak and then GMB).
The new NAT
does
need time to bed in, and as I think BBCNicky has already suggested, the programme is likely to be markedly different by the time we get to the new year - comments which I believe have been echoed by the Programme Editor Alex Chandler.
That's not to say there weren't issues with last night's broadcast, but ITN is trying to do something new with NAT so we're on a bit of a learning curve right now. Lets just give it some time ...
Despite the sensationalism, I think Bradby did pretty well. However, I don't want to hear his own opinion after stories.
The 10 minute migrant crisis report was excellent, however, that should be near the end of the program. Begin with 15 minutes of headlines, before moving onto interviews and analysis.
I don't think there will be a significant improvement in ratings, not until a full launch anyway.
I haven't actually intentionally watched the News at Ten in several years, so I don't have much to compare it to, but I found Bradby pretty awful. His casual delivery, ad-libs and choices of words were the kind of thing I'd expect during the papers on the News Channel. At times it felt like the viewer was the anchor and he was a correspondent.
His enunciation was pretty dire at times, too: "anna big u-turn," "Wha' happened tonigh'?" "The cour'," "Islamic Sta'e," "Briddish lives..."
Call me a snob but I can't take a flagship news programme seriously if it uses phrases like "do a runner," unless it's as a pun during an "and finally." And even then it had better be a good one!
I thought it was dreadful. The reports were excellent, but the lead story was worthy of a standalone special considering its length.
Bradby's contribution was little more than "a newsy chat with your mate Tom": unprofessional and dumbed down beyond recognition. I won't be watching again.
Hmm. I'll tune in again too, but only for the reports which are thankfully great examples of first-class ITN journalism. But Bradby's studio links really need toning down or at least put together by the usual writers, not him. Not really keen on the 'relaxed' approach with touches of the old sensationalism ("We have SHOCKING pictures tonight..." and "just WHAT are we going to do with them all?" etc). But, as Telly Media has reported, there's plenty of scope for further tweaks and adjustments, so I hope for News at Ten's credibility they keep tweaking until they get it right.
Yes, nothing wrong with the reports that I saw, except perhaps the poorly-chosen comparison between migrants and sardines. Sardines might well "get to lie down," but they're also dead by then.

I have to agree tom presentation need to be revised, along the lines of Sue, Moria both Alistair's or even Richard Whitmore.
