To those who don't know the history, how would you explain why ITV is the only broadcaster in the country, if not the world, that doesn't call its news service " [Name of Channel] News"

Channel 4 News has a serious reputation even though Channel 4 itself was known for many years for Big Brother and other downmarket programmes, so I doubt associating themselves with the name of the channel is anything to do with how successful it is.

I don't need to explain anything, it's fact. It operated at ITN from 1955 until 1999 during which time established itself as a leading news broadcaster. Things changed in the 90's and for the worse, the final straw coming when ITN was removed from all shows.

So, going back to my opening sentence of my first post - No Bradby won't turn around the fortunes of the bulletin. That ship has sailed.

I agree, and the name ITN does carry far more kudos. Though it's worth noting that 'ITV' as a brand is only something used in recent decades. Back in the 50s and 60s, it was never used, instead it was only the name of your ITV contractor that was used on air, so the on air name 'ITN' really was the only option.

I suspect that UTV and STV might prefer the use of ITN rather than ITV News branding ?

I think (as with most things), the ITV/ITN distinction doesn't even mean anything to Joe Public - I have to say this is the only place I've ever seen people call for its return. Rebranding the bulletin wouldn't make a difference anyway. ITV, for as long as they need viewers, will always call the shots at ITN.

Many people my age (51) and above often refer to the news on ITV as 'ITN', but don't worry we'll
all be dead and buried in the next 30 years or so.

This change is just another nail in the coffin for ITN or ITV News as it's known these days. The meddling from the suits above has failed time and time again, the biggest failing of all to remove the branding that was ITN and resigning it to the end board of each bulletin.

I'm 42, I grew up with staple news brands such as BBC, ITN, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, with lastly who SKY arrived late to the game. The audience 'trust' these brands based on their ability to tell the story. Back then it was just one bulletin that was tuned into usually in the evening, and so shows such as NBC Nightly News, CBS Evening News, ABC World News Tonight, ITN News at Ten, BBC News period drew huge audiences Generation after generation tuned in to these shows, all based on trust and inherited knowledge. The brand ITV doesn't entice 'trust'. Watered down, brain mush nonsense channel with no newsworthiness at all, and as a result the bulletins ITN produce have suffered.

There is no going back to the glory days of ITN when the there is no brand. ITV News is not a trusted brand worldwide. When CNN carry ITV news reports, they are always credited with ITN, in the UK it's ITV News.

Tom Brady will become yet another failure of a channel that lost its path years ago. When will the bigwigs learn, and especially those at ITV. NEVER EVER assume a name will save the day. Need I mention GMB, DB, NAT (when Trevor came back). It's not names we want, it's the products/brands we trust.

Rebrand ITV to ITI. INDEPENDENT TELEVISION IRRELEVANCE

Rant over.

Actually, CNN has also broadcast reports from Channel 4 News (produced by ITN, of course) correspondents.

Referring to the ITN-produced national bulletins on ITV as "ITN News" made sense in the era when most of the ITV network franchises were not held by one or two companies. That changed from 1999 onwards, i.e. Carlton and Granada, both of which merged in 2004 to form ITV plc.

Furthermore, the fact that ITV plc now owns all of the ITV network breakfast franchise means that ITV plc's national news operation - a combination of the Good Morning Britain news operation and the ITN-produced national bulletins - covers the ITV network 24 hours a day (ITN had no part in TV-am or GMTV).

On that note, I remember watching an ITV News bulletin at 10 on New Year's Eve on STV via Other Channels on Sky (because STV has a special programme to ring in the new year, of course, while the rest of the network had the news on at 11:45) a few years ago and Mary Nightingale ended the bulletin by saying "That's all from ITN...".

Furthermore, of course, UTV continuity announcer Julian Simmonds also refers to the national news as ITN.

That may well be, but what I meat is that most wouldn't understand the distinction, or more importantly, care...

ITV News has been established as a brand for 16 years now and any criticisms of it were not due to the brand name, but due to other factors at the turn of the century especially.

"ITV News" as a name is not a problem, and if ITV want their news programmes branded that way then that is entirely up to them.

The issue is the ITV News brand came in right at the time ITV's news operation became a joke and that perception stuck. Had ITV kept their news as authoritative in the early 2000s as it had been in previous years their would be no real problem with the change of branding. Instead they dramatically dumbed down their bulletins and messed the viewer around. Any lack of perception in the credibility of ITV News (no matter how good it is or isn't these days) is a direct result of the ineptitude of the management at ITV at the turn of the century - 'News at When', the increasingly tabloid approach, "The Pulse", the ITV News Channel that disappeared from Freeview for months on end and then returned only part time before disappearing forever...

Once the credibility and viewers' trust is lost, especially at a time when there was an explosion in choice for news, it is going to be incredibly difficult to ever properly regain, no matter how many times you bring back 'iconic' News At Ten or faff around with the presenting team.

Can't say I've noticed ITV News use a photo illustration beside the presenter before with this backdrop.

^ Yes it has, since day one in fact:

I wish they'd return to the over the shoulder image for good, but they don't need all those semi-transparent squares with it - just a simple square pic (like the one below), so as not to cover up the fantastic backdrop of screens.

i wish there would use them more often, but it seems there only appear when someone dies or is in real trouble.
