Is that the last year of the contract?

Yes. Trouble is even at 6m ITV aren't likely to find something that could outrate it - they've struggled to replace Dancing on Ice as it is, and also will have a big Downton sized gap in the schedules from next year too.

Unless they brought back Pop Idol and did a stripped back format like that,I can't see them cancelling it.

When the Saturday schedule is just the usual run of the mill shows like Take Me Out, The Chase etc people will miss it. Particularly the tabloids and commercial radio who still bang on about it constantly, pretty much all year round.

It's one of those situations, is it best to just plod along as a middling show consistent all the time, or is it better to be a massive show, the downside being a massive show only has one way to go. The middling shows like Casualty carry on forever.

Exactly they have a big first quarter of the year problem which they still haven't resolved after the awful flops of Stars In Their Eyes & Get Your Act Together.

Big weekend entertainment formats are running dry. Hard to see what the next big thing will be.

The only way I can see it being replaced at the moment is if Cowell replaces it with a format of his own. What could happen I guess is the same thing that has happened to almost all the reality talent shows in the US and the results show might be scrapped and everything done on one night, as it was for the first few years.

I see that ITV have revealed the entire schedule for the X Factor this year in advance and are asking the BBC not to schedule SCD against it.

Due to the Rugby World Cup there are 4 Saturdays between September 26th - October 17th where there is no X Factor Saturday episode with the entire boot camp stage going out on Sundays. Most of those Saturdays are England RWC games.

The live shows have been scaled down from 10 weekends last year to 7 this year. Of course 'Judges Houses' are live shows this time around so its really 8 'live' weekends. Last year the live shows started 11/12 October.

That lasted long.. the two shows overlap on Saturday, which is Strictly's launch show. The following weekend there isn't a Strictly due to Last Night of the Proms.

Strictly doesn't start properly for a few weeks, the launch show is always on a few weeks before the series begins for real.

Also the schedule for this weekend was announced prior to Peter Fincham announcing he was releasing The X Factor start times all together. I believe he pointed to this first overlap as an example of what can happen. Originally there was no clash but the BBC moved Strictly back to start after the football finishes on ITV. That was their excuse anyway.

Have to say I hope the BBC ignore it. People can chose which to watch, and if they want to watch both they can do the sensible thing and watch X Factor on catch-up to avoid the adverts...

Why should the BBC be forced to schedule around X Factor?

Is it me or is the x factor really dull this year, The new judges don't bring much and simons getting nicer by the second. Its not even entertaining any-more, even last year felt better. It just doesn't work having 3 young, hip judges and a 50 year old at the end. The live shows might be interesting but at the moment, all I can say is very dull.

X Factor cancels live judges' houses round
Bosses wanted the auditions, which are normally pre-recorded at luxury locations abroad, to be shown in real-time this year.

But for "logistical and technical reasons" that's not going to happen.

I wonder what the real reason for this u-turn is. Surely they would (or should) have considered the logistics of broadcasting live from four different locations. Perhaps tellingly the article mentions the MTV Europe Music Awards are occuring that weekend, which maybe limited who was available to appear live alongside the judges.

They're doing what I said they should do all along then - record judges houses and have the reveal live in the studio. Makes much more sense and now Caroline and Olly can be on location as they should - the idea of leaving them in an empty studio and sending Rylan and Myleene Klass instead never made any sense.
