TBH, I'm surprised it took them that long to join Twitter. Nick and CITV were already established on there.

Probably took the BBC this long to notice that unlike Facebook, Twitter doesn't have an age limit - I checked the Terms of Service, apparently it just asks for your date of birth and prevents you from seeing age-inappropriate ads using that info.

Although if you go to your profile to set your birthday, the year field only goes up to 1995.
