They've really pushed the 4 lead presenters in recent years instead though and it has kind of worked for the reputation of ITV News as a whole. I think it is a far better situation to be in than the BBC who have Huw as the main man but haven't got the same strength in depth, something highlighted by Georges current absense.
It is losing Julie as the main host which is my issue. The other moves would make more sense if Julie was staying either to co-host with Tom or be the face of the bulletin.
I agree, Julie is a huge asset and one they will loose to Sky or the BBC unless they give her a prominent role.
They probably wanted Julie on the 6:30 but they didn't want to get accused of pushing out Mary due to her age. It does seem odd to sideline Julie mere months after she fronted ITV's leader debate. I think she'll end up at the BBC.
Didn't think there was much difference in their age. I suspect the original Guardian report which had Mark and Julie at 6.30pm and would probably have seen Mary move to lunchtime and Alastair dropped was probably what they really wanted to do.
To be honest, I'm rather surprised they haven't given Julie a new role doing the big set-piece reports on NAT or perhaps something along the lines of 'Special Correspondent', etc. What has been announced really does look like a demotion of sorts for her - a huge shame.

Ive always wonder what ITV would have been like if kept to its original idea of Evening news at 7pm. It would have meant more radical shake up than now.

I didn't know that ITV considered having the Evening News at 7. How do you know this?

They reportedly considered it in 2000:
"ITV is proposing to move its early evening news to 7pm in a last-minute deal to avoid a damaging court battle with television regulators over the demise of News at Ten, the Guardian can reveal."

I don't think that having two prominent ITN bulletins of significant lengths of time - one on ITV, the other on Channel 4 - running against each other was a realistic prospect (it only happened once that I know of - during Euro 2000).
I think they serve quite different audiences and C4/C5 News ran against each other for years and nowadays ITV/C5 news airs head to head. A production company has little say in how their shows are scheduled.
There were rumours of 7pm once again a few years back too. The easy way to achieve it would be to switch with Emmerdale, but in reality if it were to move now I just think they'd cram Emmerdale and Coronation Street into the 7.30-9pm slot. That would leave four slots spare for the BBC to fit EastEnders in to. The simplest way to achieve that with minimal disruption would simply be to switch Emmerdale to hour-long shows on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 8pm.

That's not the same thing because 5 News is much less prominent than ITV News and Channel 4 News (Bear in mind that I used the word "prominent" to describe the ITV Evening News and Channel 4 News). Furthermore, significant numbers of viewers didn't have Channel 5 back in 2000.
