They keep saying they're going back to the 1990s as far the format is concerned, so I really wouldn't mind a return to a similar style of presentation seen here:
If they want a different look for News at Ten then they could use the background they used for the election coverage. Those two screens could show Big Ben and London, similar to election night.
No thanks. The election set was awful - too messy and busy.
I don't mean the full set! I'm talking about the background behind Tom. The rest of the set stays the same as the 1:30 and 6:30.

Seriously? Very much of its time - but even then it was very "Day Today". Pompous, overblown and a bit OTT...
I DO adore that version of the theme, but was actually talking more about the dark, moody, atmospheric look of the studio and on-screen graphics. I wouldn't mind seeing a 2015 reincarnation of the same idea.
And anyway, as I recall, BBC News presentation of the same era was far more pompous, overblown and OTT than ITN.
There was always going to be a point at which ITV realised that the News at Ten wasn't behind in the ratings because of the When era, but because of the bulletin itself.
A lot of people here forget that these companies don't make decisions based on a whim - there would most likely have been audience research conducted which came back illustrating that the ITV NaT's content and presenters simply didn't have enough authority with audiences, especially in comparison to BBC's product and Huw Edwards, hence the change.

I get what you mean. I loved the theme tune used on Election night as well - that could work.

Whilst I think the BBC stuff was also quite overblown - I'm not sure it was as overblown and OTT as News at Ten. The opening VO is almost X Factor in its delivery...

Really? It's quite reserved compared to what the BBC were using at the time, but even in comparison to the previous News at Ten titles whizzing round London. Very understated graphically. The voiceover is nothing like The X Factor IMO.
To me, this is an attempt to create a Trevor McDonald type character of Tom Bradby, someone ITV has been missing since Sir Trevor retired. There has been really no 'face' of ITV News for a number of years, I'd say the closest person being Susanna Reid. The rest of the moves are simply to accommodate Bradby on News at Ten, although I seriously hope Alastair was happy to play a less prominant role.
They've really pushed the 4 lead presenters in recent years instead though and it has kind of worked for the reputation of ITV News as a whole. I think it is a far better situation to be in than the BBC who have Huw as the main man but haven't got the same strength in depth, something highlighted by Georges current absense.
It is losing Julie as the main host which is my issue. The other moves would make more sense if Julie was staying either to co-host with Tom or be the face of the bulletin.

People are forgotten Alastair has been covering ITN news for the past 35 years. he 63, I sure he would like to have some spare time.
