They could have still utilised the 5 screens in portrait like Brekkie says and could have even panelling similar to GMB's corridor effect print or the blue panelled boards similar to ITV National News for studios with the room.
Something like this could have been an option:
Maybe it's considered too old fashioned now to use a printed backdrop.
Couldn't the regions have just gone for a CSO screen as the backdrop instead. Many of the regions used CSO elements before the generic days and I'd have thought just using it for the backdrop to give a view like London Tonight has, while keeping the set real at the sides, wouldn't be beyond their capabilities.
Unless you've got the sort of VR set-up they have at GIR, then any CSO is going to look like something from the 1980s. How very retro!
Central seem to still be getting used to the new setup as we don't always have a proper close to the bulletin at the moment with the lights fading down. Sometimes just a sting off with an endcap rather than no pan off. I must admit I have always liked that they make the effort to the close to bulletin properly unlike other regions.
Central's weather update during This Morning for the West Midlands had to be abandoned as Lucy Kite's mic wasn't working. Cue scenes of her rejigging her mic and a VT clock before we were taken to the East Midlands forecast.
I'm guessing that was just a VT error and I'm presuming that the morning forecast isn't shown live?
A few weeks later, Central seem to have finally sorted out the lighting.
I did not realise that the other studio next door has main access doors through the Central studio, so if it has cars in there, they must have to drive them through Central's studio to get them in. (plans on Gas Street website).
You can also see in the revamp video, that the silver panel behind the side screens on the right side is on a trolley, so they can move it when they need wide access to the other studio. Very interesting stuff, I suppose when Central originally split the studio, there wasn't any need for seperate main access points.

The 'other' studio isn't a studio anymore, it's a Zeiss showroom... It had its main access door moved to a set of double doors and the door between the studio and the showroom is bolted shut now.
