Though to be fair he does a very long day on Fridays with Radio 2 Breakfast and The One Show on the same day. Doing that and Top Gear studio recordings and location filming (if it follows that format) along with Radio 2 Breakfast Mon-Fri would have been pretty knackering.

I think leaving The One Show is more about TFI really. He could have still presented Fridays One Show for a lot of the year otherwise.

He could have asked Radio2 for Fridays off.

Yeah, he took Mondays and Fridays off while he was doing Toothbrush. I don't think this is a major problem, he's already been doing The One Show every Friday for five years as well as other programmes like the VE Day commemorations which would have taken a lot of time to rehearse and prepare.
He said in his book he could have done the breakfast show and TFI really, he was just a total idiot in those days. He happily did the two for the first year.
That was Don't Forget Your Toothbrush, he'd been gone from The Big Breakfast about 18 months by the time TFI began.

The other factor is that Chris's Radio 2 show now has Sara Cox as a permanent holiday stand-in, so presumably that means they're happier to give him more time off throughout the year

I guess time off for a BBC project is less of a problem than the famous request for Fridays off too.
Radio 2 have pulled off quite a good bit of scheduling there, with Sara Cox not having a regular weekday gig she can cover Breakfast without having to rearrange the whole schedule. Compared with the Radio 1 approach of the drive presenter covering Breakfast, the early presenter covering Drive, somebody from 1Xtra does earlies and somebody else covers their 1Xtra shift. It's quite rare for somebody who would be trusted with Breakfast to be doing the less prestigious weekend shifts but it seems to suit all concerned and give them a lot of flexibility.
Even if it does mean that the chances of Chris Moyles being tempted back to the airwaves to dep for Evans less likely.

This could solve the 'Need for a full-time daytime Female Radio 2 Presenter' issue that's long been long mentioned. If Evans moves to TV full-time.

Evans said on his radio show this morning, that 'his first love is radio' and he won't be giving it up any time soon (Which probably, based on other recent statements, means he will !)
