So basically up to 12 minutes an hour if they're on satellite, potentially more if not. I suspect many though probably struggle to sell the airtime as it is so that should keep the number of ads in check. I don't think anyone else has watched a local channel long enough to actually get to the ad break to see how long it is.

I suspect that if they are FTV encrypted - as London Live are - then they aren't "broadcast on a satellite platform which is
receivable outside of the UK" as the FTV cards are limited to UK addresses - so the 12 minute rule wouldn't apply? It would only be if they are FTA that it would.

The Goat Race is on London Live at 4pm on Saturday. Another live OB for LL, I hope it's better than the boxing?

Maybe this week's change is related to the live Goat Race coverage.

True, they're more likely to get more from the lives from the farm from 1-2pm than at noon which will pad their bulletin out easier.

It does make the LL gallery busy tomorrow with 1-2, 4-5 and 6-7 all live.

The Goat Race was presented by Alison Earle and a hipster character called Kevin Powder who also provided the commentary.

Saw the hipster on a preview yesterday. Certainly a strange concept.

Just when you think they're moving away from targeting Hoxton hipsters.

The odd one slips in here and there - it's like an addiction.

Now that Spring has finally sprung I hope LL decide to update their news openers. Be nice to see some sunshine and red Boris bikes!

The evening news titles are still dark despite staying light until around 7.45pm.

Maybe a job for the Mocks boys? They must be able to better what's currently there.

If you look at the ratings over a period of time, the problem for London Live is they have no regular 'winners' - either programmes or timeslots. They're building no regular audience.

On another point I see Made in Chelsea is taking a break the week after next to be replaced by another E4 show Dirty Sexy Things.

I'm certainly not saying that all local stations must have 100% local programming either. On the contrary. But I do believe that if a channel commits to say 8 hours of local programming per day, 3 of which will be in primetime, then they should deliver this. The local programming is their USP.

Incidentally, now London Live are into their second year, the 8 hour daily local commitment has increased to 9.

It does seem really strange to get an audience (or any semblance that you might have) to tune in on a regular basis for a programme and then take it away. They have put quite a bit or work, by their standards, into letting people know that Made In Chelsea is there and at that time to to take that away again as it becomes a habit for viewers seems counterproductive. It's also happened with the 7pm cooking show they were running - that's also apparently been switched out mid season.

Now, that's a tactic that might work for a show like The Walking Dead or Mad Men where there is a natural midseason break on an initial run but to do it with a repeat it just seems odd. Also, if I remember correctly, Dirty Sexy Things was hardly a ratings winner the first time around (still available to watch online on the 4 website by the way but was far from a ratings winner) and isn't exactly London-centric as they went off to Milan, Paris, Iceland etc. It's all starting to feel a bit tenuous, a bit bizarre and a bit all over the place as far as content is concerned. If the channel doesn't appear to know what it is then how is the audience? If I was an advertiser I certainly wouldn't buy in.

Primetime is very weak really and I do think that unless these channels are showing local content from at 8-10pm consistently (the odd rerun in the mix is fine) there really isn't much point. The current schedule is using the sort of filler that C4 put out on 4Music - and is just as irrelevent here, especially airing stripped across the week in primetime. It's fine to use as filler after 10pm or so but the current schedule very much positions London Live as just another Freeview "digital" channel rather than competing with the big boys.
