Interesting but slightly OT aside is that the organisation the Football Conference itself is changing its name to the National League from next August, an odd move given that they had only just brought back the "Conference" title into their branding after years as the "Blue Square (Bet)/Skrill Premier".

My take is that the campaign to fully integrate the fifth tier (and by inference those below) with the fourth will ramp up following this announcement. The campaign for three, even four up/down between the Sky Bet League Two and the Vanarama National League will intensify in the coming months. The new name would seem to make the league sound a more serious outfit.

It is bizzare for an organisation to call itself the National League when two of its three member divisions are not national. Everyone will still call it the Conference. In fact I still hear people calling it the Vauxhall Conference.

But combined they're a national unit. Surely not?

I think having a division called the National League North is just a nonsense.

No more nonsense than the Blue Square Premier.

I could never understand what was premier about the fifth tier. To this day Alan Lambourne still says "The Vanarama Conference Premier League" before reading out the Conference results on Soccer Saturday.

It's the 'premier' league of the football conference.

When Blue Square stated their sponsorship, they renamed the Conference as the Premier division, and the two regional divisions became Division 1 North and Division 1 South. Since then, each new sponsor has tinkered with the names (for better or for worse) but the official name for the league has always been the Football Conference.

I'm not a big fan of dumping the Conference name, given how well established it is, but if it will help to bridge the gap with the Football League then it's worth trying.

As a Dartford fan, this is all a bit academic at the moment, anyway!
