On June 22, DW will also launch a 24-hour English-language news channel called DW News, which will originate from a brand-new studio. Apparently, the decision to launch the channel came -- in part -- in response to the recent expansion of Russia's RT, whose anti-Western propaganda worries Germany.

If only other Western governments realize there's an information war happening. You have the UK PM whining about Russia but seems to see no need to restore funding to the BBC World Service. I believe those cuts add a burden to other BBC services. It's definitely seems like BBC WN is becoming more like CNN than AJE in terms of story choices at times. Sad

Oooh. I quite like that set. A definite step up from what they had before.

I hate fully 'stand up' news, I find it pointless - I really hope we don't follow most of Europe with doing this.

Isn't one of the arguments behind it that standing allows you to project your voice better - presentation is therefore clearer?

In Germany nearly all news broadcasts are presented standing. Including 4-hour shifts on "Tagesschau24"...

We certainly seem to be the odd ones out with our sitting-down style of presentation.

There are plenty of European channels -- the majority, it's safe to say -- that still use sitting-down news presentation. (Germany is an exception in that most of their channels use standing anchors.)

Where did stand up news presentation originate? I assumed it was the likes of CNN and NBC in the US that started the craze off. I'm pretty sure the first UK news channel to adopt it was Sky News, although I maybe wrong.

I can clearly remember BBC news adopting it, for one bulletin only, on the day the USSR invaded Afghanistan, back in 1979. It was Peter Woods at the beginning of the The Nine O'Clock News. It generated a stream of letters to Points of View the following week !

No. That hasnt been a "thing" on CNN and NBC Nightly news until recent years. There may have been the odd bulletin here or there over the years.. but they are mainly presented sitting. CNN is all over the shop. But typical news casts back in the day were presented seated.

But in 1956 TODAY was presented in parts standing up.. but thats not your typical newscasts persay...so not sure if that counts.

An affiliate in Indianapolis in 70s presented it news standing up. Didnt last very long.

Of course Citytv Toronto perfected the standup newscasts on CityPulse in that late 70s and they still do it today. Its their trademark. They've alway stood up except of the very very early years right after the launch of the channel.

CNN is pretty much all sitting presentation these days. It was also quite late to catch up on the stand up presentation craze. I always think of Sky News as the channel that really brought it to the mainstream, with their 2005 relunch.

Even more so on CNN US. What show is presented standing up? I can't think of any.

On CNNI, IDesk starts with stand up presentation but after 10 minutes it's desk bound. Quest walks around his big set a lot but is also mainly at the desk. The only 2 shows done entirely standing up are NewsStream with Kristie Lu Stout and 30 minute NewsCenter with Isha Sesay, done from the newsroom.
