If you take a wider look at it, John rarely presents the showbiz/fluff features unless it is something like 'miracle baby' etc. Ben does it, Aled and Matt did before him, and Dan, and Adrian, and Andrew, and Eamonn...
But maybe Susanna did today as she wasn't in the studio on 29th, 30th and 31st December (just filling in the gaps
Your brain actually took the time to think that, huh? *sense of overwhelming despair, especially given we're talking about a situation in which of a couple of dozen people have died*
One problem that I've noticed, in general. In America, they dress up the fluff with flashy segment intros and semi-custom music and re-lit bits of set with their own straps etc. GMB have re-cut the open for the 8am half hour (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOcNaOv9WMI), which is the fluff heavy part of the show. It still needs some sort of distinction from the main show, as it uses the straps and flags that are used for news and features etc.
A few ways I was thinking of to make a distinction, in the video mentioned, would have been to change the opener frame to blue and yellow like the image in the green room is to and then to have the camera that Jeremy was on, turn left into the studio and do the camera spin to get the shot of Jesse & Blue, and then turn right towards the weather screen, where the titles are rolling. Keeping the one continuous shot makes it flow a bit better too.
Of course, they could have their own, personality based title sequence for the 8am, with shots filmed earlier in the day & stock shots from promo's and previous shows, similar to Today at 8am, bar the plaza screamers.
Yes flashy, very American and very CNN, but it does seem, to me at least, to be the only way to make a distinction between the main, newsy-ish show and the entertainment stuff.
But what would that achieve? It's fine how it is. Don't make things more complicated. "fluffy" and "light" or not, it's an authorative title sequence.
Do you want to be a director or something? You go into such detail about camera shots and stuff.
Allow me to throw a spanner in the works, what if there was no "Jeremy Kyle" or "Blue" or anything like that that day? Are you just going to have a camera shot of an empty corridor?

As multiple people have said in this thread, it's about the content, not the presentation.
After a week of the programme, I will say that as much as I still like the old theme, the new lighter one has grown on me and the bed especially fits the programme. The content has found a lovely balance this week with a good focus on the news early on, a human interest story (the girl with the life saving dress for example) and the running sugar free diet segment that has good information and interaction elements with the audience. The new desk is not as good as the previous, however could the new desk be to make it easily moveable so that the studio could be used for other programmes (as Studio 5 was during the GMTV days). I'm still not keen on the shouty female voiceover and feel that the previous voiceover would have fitted in perfectly.
