Nothing too special, but a slight improvement with the evening bulletins.

News for the news-avoiders

Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards’ endorsement of Channel 5 News was music to my ears

When I was appointed editor of 5 News in November last year, one of my first tasks was to create a mission statement for the team. What was 5 News about? What made it different from the other TV news shows?

Over pizza and beer in the top floor boardroom, each member of the team wrote down in one sentence what they thought 5 News stood for. A memorable one read: “We make the news for people who just aren’t that into news.”

Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards was not there that night, but his comments to MPs last week demonstrate that he totally understands what 5 News is about.

He told the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee: “Their news is absolutely well worth having. It helps with the plurality of news and it typically reaches a demographic of people who other news programmes do not reach – you will find people watching the news on Channel 5 that may not know what time Newsnight is on.”

His words were music to my ears, partly because my second task as editor is to get more attention for what 5 News is achieving every day. We are the first TV news show of the evening. Our audience share is up there and often beyond some of our competitors. We beat the BBC Ten O’Clock News to an RTS nomination for Programme of the Year.

Our viewers are more female, and more blue collar, than any other news show. And they are more likely to live outside London. They are voters, they are supermarket shoppers. They have bank accounts. Our audience are consumers – and they listen to us. This is something spin doctors, campaigners and PRs are starting to recognise. On the day he announced measures to tackle the housing bubble, the governor of the Bank of England chose to give two interviews: one to the BBC’s Robert Peston and one to 5 News presenter Emma Crosby.

So as the news service that gets to the audiences the others don’t reach, what exactly is 5 News about? We’re a small team of friendly faces that our viewers trust to tell all they need to know about what’s happened in the world. We focus on domestic stories about the things that affect our viewers: consumer issues, health news, the cost of living, childcare and showbusiness. But when a story abroad is important to them, we cover that too, whether it’s the plight of the Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Harem or Prince George on his first royal tour.

We work hard to make our reports distinctive and different. We lead our programmes with the stories that are the best telly – not the ones that lead everyone else’s running orders. We may not be the brand of choice for the chattering classes, but we’re proud of who we are and of who our audience is too. We ask the questions they want answers to – rather than the ones that make us look clever, and we don’t take no for answer. We’re 5 News. Give us a try. You might be surprised. And you won’t have to stay up late.

You're being a bit of an idiot. Why you've put in charge a department of BBC News, I've no idea.

I don't think you understand what i've asked/said. Obviously 5 news will have to move from the n&s building at some point, i was merely asking if the program will move back to the ITN headquarters, or go elsewhere. FYI, ITN produces the bulletins/shows for Channel five. Rolling Eyes

My friend works for C5's in house production team and said that themselves and Milkshake won't be moving out of the N&S building in Docklands "for the next 18 months" which could mean that the news studio might remain in the main N&S building. Though presumably they'd now have to pay rent which they didn't previously. Could well be cheaper for them just to move back to Grey's Inn.

Studio 2 and the recently moved PCR 2 (it's now in the basement with PCR 1 as opposed to on the ground floor) are not used much at the moment so I guess they could go in there. It's currently just a green screen set up in Studio 2, which is just like they had previously at Gray's Inn Road when they were in Studio 1.

There have been lots of changes at Gray's Inn Road of late - PCR 5 and Studio 5 (prior home to Channel 5 News in the late 90s/early 2000s and Setanta Sports News) were converted back to office space a while back; now the original PCR 2 and Studio 4 (used to be London Tonight) have been completely ripped out and are now office space again. Similarly, PCR 4 (used to be the ITN News Channel control room and most recently Channel 5 News) has also gone and is now offices again. There's only really Channel 4 in PCR 6/Studio 6 that hasn't altered in any way! PCR 1 hasn't changed, however ITV News moved into Studio 1 a while back.

Warren Nettleford is presenting 5 News headlines this evening.

He has been presenting since at least Sunday evening when I watched, since Monday, lunchtime and evening updates. According to his twitter bio, he recently joined 5 News from BBC.

But I am still not liking this perch on the very edge of the desk.

I think for me I'd prefer a seated perch on the edge of the desk rather than the seat in the middle of nowhere. Hopefully any rebrand will get rid of that big bulky desk.

I'm of a minority though who'd love to see it back in the action of the newsroom.

Warren Nettleford presenting the updates tonight, what an atrocious 'newsreader'. No tone in his voice whatsoever.
