WGN 9 Chicago (Independent) created a majestic opening and theme used in the 1990s. It features the opening string sound of NBC Nightly News and then adds its own twist with the WGN signature. WGN is owned by the Chicago Tribune. The opening shot flies in toward the skyline across Lake Michigan and then flies down the skyscraper canyon Chicago River ending at the Tribune Tower whilst the 9 logo forms. IMO For a local station one word applies: Epic! (There is a bonus featuring the station ident.)
All Tribune owned stations currently uses this slate at the end featuring the distinctive Tribune Tower.

The Mission or nothing for me.
Both the old version and the recent version are good in their own way.

If you haven never heard an unadulterated version of the newer NBC Today theme here it is. I still miss the original Mission version. But i do like the punchier feel of this theme for a morning programme.
Just for fun if you've never seen the debut edition of the grandaddy of all breakfast programmes, Here is the very first edition of Today from 1952! They even had a ticker back then!

The new Today theme isn't the proper version, the vocals have just muted as you can hear Matt Lauer at the end of it...

Yes, it's a pretty poor example. You can hear a lot of chopping going on (and obvious changes in audio quality).

Interesting listen. WPLG 10 Miami slaughtered Channel 5 original theme when they used it back in 2004-05

If that's exactly how they used it, then it's the same as it is in the K PM library

Here is another slaughtered version of the Channel 5 theme that was used on Citytv's now defunct CityNews Channel Toronto. You can just about hear the CityNews signature just before the Channel 5 theme bed kicks in on this clip.

WGN 9 - Chicago
Finally Tribune's flagship station had a graphics overhaul after what seems like 1000 years of the same. They also use different cuts of their "Chicago Very Own" theme, which resurrected their old signature from the early 90s. The graphics are a major update. They again emphasied they are Chicago's Very Own but subtly uses the famous Chicago Skyline architecture as the font changes (pretty ingenious). Not sure if all the new cuts of "Chicagos Very Own" are that good. All of this comes on WGN's major news ramp-up by adding a 4-6 newscast. Unfortunately this saw them dump their innovative "newsroom" broadcast.
