I've become properly obsessed with police chases on YouTube lately and just watched that one the other day. Hilariously funny. But a good job the cops pay attention to the tv coverage. Sometimes the pilots on the tv choppers contact the police choppers on the air to air freqs and pass on information.

You can get twitter alert for chases if you follow @pcalive.
The funny thing about chases is you know the person nis going to get caught they usually do, I guess the fascinating thing is the depths people will go thru to get away. I saw one chase where the guy literally ground down the tyres and then the rims until the car was actually moving along the bottom of the car...going no where. Amazing.

That was properly insane but with a really muted ending. Nice coverage with NBC4 giving two angles.

The NBC San Diego chopper was able to fly much lower, leading to a better angle on the truck compared to the LA market choppers which had to fly higher to get the pictures the 50 or so miles back to LA

I would image the sky was pretty crowed over that petrol station. All the LA stations scrambled their choppers and once it entered the SD market their choppers went to the scene. Crowded skies.

Yeah I did wonder that. There were at least 5 LA area choppers (CBS/ABC/NBC/FOX/CW) for sure, plus I imagine the police chopper for either SDPD or the CHP, and I have no idea how many SD area TV choppers were up but we know for sure that NBC were up there.

So that's at least 7 or 8 all flying Visual Flight Rules in a very small area.

Couldn't believe how close KNBC were, KTLA were saying that the Burbank ATC had told them to move away to 2 miles distance to give the police room to work and for safety reasons. So if some stations ignored that, I would assume the FAA would have something to say about it later...

What do use to get these streams?

Well as mentioned in the thread there is a Twitter account called @PCALive which will alert you whenever something is happening. I have push notifications on Twitter on my iPhone so it instantly alerts me if this account sends out a message.

I have tweetdeck and follow @pcalive and all of the LA tv stations and also the accounts for the assignment desk editors at those stations also there are several "chase" accounts that tweet. Plus i follow a LA "Scanner" account. They usually get the first "twinges" somethig is about to happen. I usually beat @pcalive and alert them. They thanked me for tweeting them about this last chase.
Also if you can follow matthew keys he created a map for North America that shows the major markets and links to their live streams for Radio and TV also he created a twitter list for each markey that allows you to follow all the local media posts whilst a major story is happening. Handy
