Am I right in thinking though that even though the US have 3 or 4 breaks an hour, they are shorter in length than the UK breaks?

Yes, in general in the US they are only 2 minutes long most ad breaks but on the main four it's more like 3 or 4 every half hour.

Even if there is no need to have it I'm sure it will help some people. It would also make the show stand out more too.

If they don't acknowledge adverts in the way that prime time Live TV does, but instead act in the way Sky Sports News, and Im sure Sky news do, by going to regular, short breaks the programme is more likely to run smoothly, compared to Daybreak, IMO. There would be no need to continue graphics throughout the ad breaks, which whilst it would be a nice touch, is probably a lot of hassle as Brekkie has already said!

It's not about it being a nice touch, it's quite important I think. If (like me) you're rushing around different rooms in the morning, and you need to know what the time is all of the time, then I think it is really important to have a clock at all times and - to an extent - a ticker.

Most people wear a watch, and have a clock near the TV, there's no need to have it on during breaks. It would probably take time and money, that is unnecessary, and won't in the short or long term attract new viewers!

My only clock is in the kitchen. I don't wear a watch that early in the morning - I have more important things to do in the morning than get my watch on - I'm to tired. I always refer to the clock on Breakfast or the kitchen clock or my phone.

I was exaggerating when I said if they don't have a clock I will switch over too Breakfast straight away. If they don't have a clock then I am not going to be really upset. But it will be very useful. I know because I rely on the Breakfast one.

You can buy these things called clocks - even have them on the walls of all these rooms you're rushing around in the morning, or if you want to really show off get yourself a watch.

In all truth nowadays people tend to reach for their mobile to check the time anyway.

So you think they should have a clock on the ads just for you then?

I don't really pay attention to the clock itself on Breakfast - kind of judge it by the running order. Usually I watch the sports news then leave - if I'm still around by the time the weather comes on I know I'm running late.

Just putting this out their, how long before a major presenting line-up change or revamp of Good Morning Britain?

Given ITV Breakfast's average seems to be 1 a year, I wouldn't get to excited about this as it probably won't be around very long.

I don't think this has been posted yet, but just in case you haven't seen it... it looks like they are going to have some kind of roadshow with a game:

Quote:
Good Morning Britain is travelling around the UK giving members of the public the chance to come and visit us on location and even to play and win prizes.

On Monday 28th we’ll be in Leeds Kirkgate Market from 6am to 9.25am. Registration to play our games is expected to begin from 6.50am. There are limited spaces available and not everyone will get to play or be seen on the programme. Participation times will vary and further terms will apply on the day.

We’ll be playing the Spinning Wheel game. We will be operating a random selection to determine who gets to play the game. It's first come, first served and then we’ll check eligibility and if you’re eligible and one of the first 5 to then you’ll be put into our random draw to play the game.

To take part in the games, you must be 18 or over to participate and can’t be an ITV employee or relation of an ITV employee and you must be available to play the games at the times our production team require. You must also agree to be filmed and sign the release form and any other forms provided by our production team. We can use any film however we like and there will be no payment.

In the event of dispute, our production team’s decision will be final.

Where will we be for the rest of the week?

Tuesday - Saffron Walden, Essex
Wednesday - Newark Market, Nottinghamshire
Thursday - Dundee - World Village Market
Friday - Grainger Market, Newcastle

Surely ITV will be loosing out financially if the competitions are not available to enter on phone or text?

No - I never said that. But it would be useful. That's all I am saying. Let's stop this argument now shall we?

Ads aren't the reason they're losing to Breakfast - it's the bit between the ads which have been the problem.

I'm sure the ad breaks play a part. Perhaps there were too many, but the 'dip in' format of a breakfast show just doesn't lend itself to 3 or 4 ad breaks an hour.

I think having the ticker and graphics underneath the adverts would actually be very, very sensible for Good Morning Britain.

It all depends on the content. The frequency of ads never bothered me on The Big Breakfast as they were effectively just part of the running order - and always in between features rather than interupting them. And everyone seems to say ITV should be looking to the US or Australia to see how to do a breakfast show - well they both cope perfectly fine with far more than 3-4 breaks an hour.

Those US & Australian networks aren't competing with non-advertising licence fee funded opposition though.

Advertising is a factor. We've become less tolerant of advertising as a whole with the prevelance of PVR's, catch-up services etc for viewing at other periods in the day. When people have even less time at Breakfast this intolerance to advertising is multiplied.

The content will have to be really outstanding to stem the tide.

I would be (happily) gobsmacked if there wasn't a 'play at home' option to go along with the live competitions. I would be (even more happily) gobsmacked if there wasn't a premium (revenue generating) phone number associated with this.
