Is it just me or do the images on the video wall during the intro sequence bear a vague resemblance to the intro sequence used by Slovenian public television?

Here's another clip for comparison -- needless to say, ARD's set is vastly superior:

From my Google translate skills, not a lot of people seem to like the new music on Twitter. I think its absolutely fantastic, personally. It sounds like the first version of the theme used in 1952 and also is a lot, lot better than what it has replaced. The previous theme was very cheesy and sounded like a parody of itself.

Absolutely love the set, especially how the story images flow across the wall.

I agree wholeheartedly. I suppose the people who don't like any big change are bound to be the most vocal on Twitter.

Just the new Tagesthemen on air for the first time, slightly different intro tune and different camera angle .

Here's tonight's Tagesschau in its entirety:

And here's a long feature from ARD about the new look:

This really is next level broadcast design. Pretty paired back and conservative, as Tagesschau is known for being, yet the attention to detail is amazing. The craftsmanship of the desks, the way the screen graphics animate, the sequencing of the theme and voiceover has all been so well resolved. Being stuck in rehearsals for 2 years has really paid dividends.

Great video. Do I detect a little dig at ZDF and their Heute studio? "No virtual studio, what the viewer sees is what the presenter sees"? Nice water-cooled, projectors, bounced off mirrors and seamlessly blended to create the "Media band".

Watching the opening move - ARD get right absolutely everything that ZDF got wrong.

Looks like they have AR (Augmented Reality) to allow 3D foreground elements to be composited into real backgrounds - and because they are using a robo-jib, presumably getting the camera tracking data required is just a data-harvesting exercise.

The desk is a beautiful bit of design. Can only imagine how much it cost - but it's money being put on the screen, and incredibly practical.

More than makes up for the ZDF disappointment - this really does raise the bar in Germany. Be interesting to see if the relatively sedate production of ARD's news changes as they embrace the new bells and whistles, and also interesting to see how integrated Mosart is to their production.

German TV has traditionally not be been short of money...

Tagesschau has been a bit indulgent and posted several picture galleries relating to the new studio.

Switch from old studio to new:

I would disagree.

Really don't see what you're all so impressed by. It's nothing special at all and what's the point in having a set which supposedly looks so great when 95% of the show is just a fixed shot which could easily be done CSO (is that because it's a weekend bulletin?) I find it really cold and soleless - quite detached from both the news and the viewers.

I can't really compare to other stations in Germany or what has gone before as I'm completely unfamilar with broadcast news in that country, but from an outsider looking in I just don't think it works at all.

Thanks for the explanation, noggin. My German is rather rusty!

It's amazing how far back-projection seems to have come. That 'media band' certainly has a higher quality image than anything else I've seen: the ability to integrate what looks like 4 (or 5) separate projectors without any visible join between images looks very successful on screen.

The set as a whole does make me think of the bridge of the Enterprise in the latest Star Trek films. Very Happy

On Bild, 34% said it was super, 21% saying it was lousy, and 45% had not seen it. Apparently 6.2 million watched Tagesschau last night.
