We live in a globalized world, so to dismiss other countries' experiences outright makes no sense. After all, there were people who claimed that multichannel TV would never work in the UK.

Where's the evidence that it actually does, and how do you evaluate that ? Many would say they watch no more (or less) TV than 20 years ago, it's just harder to find what they want to watch, and it often requires a payment. Not sure that's progress ?

Pleased to say that Wake Up London does seem to be steadily improving. Today's was the best yet - decent smog coverage using both live reporters (possibly overkill - but at least it was for a relevant story rather than dogs vs cats) and an interview with the Standard's Health Correspondent, comprehensive headline sequences, and some nice lighter items.

Vanessa, while still far from perfect, is definitely getting better, with more concise and informative bulletins.

One thing they need to stop doing is making such a big deal about things that go wrong. Understandable to be a bit thrown when there are problems on a brand new programme - but they just need to move swiftly on. For example, this morning there was a bit of a pause between Marc's intro and the headlines - but, rather than just carry on, he said "sorry, I was in a world of my own just then" or something like that. Best just to move onwards and upwards - as more people will have noticed the apology than the pause itself.

I've finally got around to watching some of London Live's news coverage. The first 30 minutes was talking air quality - a roundtable discussion, followed by an OB from Ally Pally, some archive footage from the 60s, and a clip of the PM on BBC Breakfast - then some self-pluggery, and finally some actual news from the Evening Standard's political editor, about possible corruption in Tower Hamlets.

It's like all the right bits are there, just not quite in the right order.

Agreed with the slight improvement to Wake Up London, although Vanessa continues to be the weak link. One forecast focused in on Welling and Abbey Wood "dat's where I'm from, hi Mum!" I know she's trying to be edgy, but the stumbling and waffling links continue to be frustrating.

The travel bulletins appeared to only focus on the two same roads and the tube lines.

One of the OB's from Clapham Junction was a tad frustrating when the reporter voxed a passenger waiting at the bus stop who wasn't that interested, but at least it was topical today, rather than the cats and dogs nonsense from Wednesday.

Which is why looking to America made no sense at all when we share far more similarities with our European neighbours - and France and Germany at least have strong regional models - as did we up until 15-20 years ago. This notion that began in the late 90s that viewers wouldn't care about local content following digital switchover was completely without merit and an entire industry has been allowed to crumble because of it.

Well you are are looking for a local news that is based in Europe, Moscow 24 might be worth looking at. Its a 24 hour news channel for Moscow. It was launched in 2011. I dont speak Russian. it seems to be a rolling format. The presentation is a bit odd actually seems a strange. The reporter seem to work in stacked pods and a boomcam swoops up to their pod so they can present their story. But it seems to be a channel that appeals to all Muscovites. They have music performances on the level below. I believe its state-owned, which of course calls into question its editorial control.

All about the McKenzies. What a good comedy, the type of sitcom C4 would have commissioned 20 years ago.

Not sure if that's meant to be praise or not. But considering it's nearly 20 years since Father Ted I'm going to assume it's good.

There's plenty of evidence that multichannel TV works in the UK, just as it works in every other developed country. BSkyB is a hugely successful company, and plenty of Freeview channels make money from advertising. If there wasn't a market for multichannel TV, it wouldn't survive as a business model. (The total amount of time spent in front of TV is irrelevant, because the viewing is now far more fragmented.)

I'm not really sure what your point is, but it's starting to get tedious.

I don't find his posts tedious. He's giving examples of successful local TV ventures in other countries for comparison -- I have done that as well. Multi-country comparisons are important in the television industry, especially in the context of start-ups, and in an area where Britain doesn't have much experience (local urban TV).

(Of course, if that belongs in another thread, that's another matter.)
