The CBS Affiliate in Phoenix Arizona just updated their set. It sorta follows the CBS O&O style sets. No wood and lots of blue.

Interesting how blue seems to almost universally be the news colour. Would've thought at least one of the networks would try to stand out.

In the States news consultants over the years have pushed blue as "the" color. According to their research flesh tones look better on blue sets. So the pattern seems to have stuck down to this day. But I agree its is quite annoying.

Presumably related to the whole Blue and Orange colour wheel/grading issue.

Yeah. Unfortunately that doesnt explain the over-use of blue for graphics and mic flags.

A slightly weird one here from WGBO-TV, a Univision affilliate in Chicago, Illinois with the skyline below rather than above. Seems really weird to me.

Their 2012 set looked quite nice aswell.

By far the strangest set to premiere in a while. I dont get any thing about. But they must be proud, because they were able to get Mayor Emanuel to appear on the debut newscast. Everything about the set is odd. And that previous set wasnt very old. This is definitely a head scratcher. Maybe they were trying to echoing modern-ness of the Network news set.

The ABC network has not mandated a set design or even design cues for their sets. They are literally all over the place. Most ABC afilliates use the historical Circle 7 logo. This logo appeared in 1962 exclusively for ABC stations across the country.

All anchors were mandated to wear the famous pin on their lapels for decades.

Most ABC affiliates sets have no rhyme or reason IMO. So far the O&O station have not jumped on the bright and clean set designs. Most sets are dark and has lots of wood. Many are streetfront designs. But the fact that most ABC O&O are #1 in their market might be the reason why the stations haven't updated or changed. People are familiar with the anchors and sets etc.

WABC 7 New York. This is street-front studio.

Interesting that. The BBC used to use Blue extensively until the late 90s. Their consultants and research suggested blue was cold and distancing - so they moved to the ivory/red palette, which was more recently tweaked to white and red.

ITV News is currently very blue - and does subjectively feel a little colder (and in ratings terms is massively behind - though I don't think you can attribute that entirely to the set colour!)

So that presumably explains the amount of wood in American news sets - trying to warm up the blue that they apparently must use for skin tones!

The BBC used to use Blue extensively until the late 90s.

In the days of the very blue MT/EMT look (at the top of this page), during the short Saturday teatime bulletins, one (or two?) of the blue stipes below the programme name would be coloured green instead, containing text saying "news and sport" or similar - emphasising the presence of local football results in the bulletin.

As a youngster at the time, I felt that there was a certain "blue for news, green for sport" principal at work. I dislike such simple colour associations (for anything in life, not just TV news), as they strike me as being by and for thick people.

I get the impression that much TV output around the world still does follow the "blue for news, green for sport" principle. I very much like the fact that auntie Beeb nowadays fly in the face of that, with red/white/grey for news and yellow/black/pale blue/some red for sport.
