What do you mean what?

That's what I was asking myself.

Im just saying that I doubt that the Beeb will buy ch5

Yes, that's for certain.

I think that ITV could be potentially interested and that the other 3 are definately potential owners.

Well yes, we know this already.

Grammar fail thread titles tend to be a warning sign...

I don't think Comcast would change 5. They may make 5USA into NBC UK, which would be less bad as changing the main channel into NBC UK.

I think the favourites to buy 5 are SKY and BT.

There is no way Channel 5 is worth £700m.

How much do we reckon it's worth?

Roy Greenslade is reporting that Discovery and BSkyB may put in a joint bid for C5.

I think a very important point needs to be raised is the role of Desmond's other assets in the improved fortunes of Channel 5.

Granted, it is more profitable in part because of much needed cutbacks, but N&S pay Channel 5 an estimated £30m advertising revenue for its newspapers/magazines. The same titles then give Channel 5 programmes a huge amount of free publicity.

It's currently been valued on the basis of generating a £70m profit each year for the next 10 years. I think we'd be looking at a figure of £30-£50m on average.

The only way to boost the value would be to look at some sort of promotion deal with N&S in the long term. However this would be unlikely to happen with BSkyB. Of course, if Sky took it on, there would be the support of Murdoch's other media outlets but nowhere near as brazen as the Desmond titles.

Although the tiresome amounts of publicity to Channel 5 given by the Express's small readership is far less effective than that happens with the Murdoch titles.

The other factor is that Desmond integrated C5 into his company, it isn't stand alone anymore. C5 staff were moved into the N&S building and news facilities built there. I think in the end he didn't bring payout in-house but some of the back end was merged with his other tv assets.

They're all arrangements that will most likely end depending on who buys it

I think that BT5 is a terrible name. It suggests that there is a BT 1, 2, 3 & 4. I hope that it is still called channel 5 but that it gets a brand refresh from whoever buys it. If BT were to buy it they could do a great job in raising the profile of sport and so could sky - by broadcasting certain events on ch5.

If sky were to buy it, would 5 news stay with ITN? Surely it would be produced by Sky news again.

An american channel would add a lot of content to the channel. Im not sure that Discovery is best suited to ch5 though - the discovery channel and ch5 contrast heavily.

Not really - look at The Netherlands .....

Is there a RTL1,2,3?

Thee are 2 channels with 5 in the name (RTL5 Net5)

Where are SBS 1-5?

To be fair, I could see, if BT did buy, keeping the name Channel 5. And as someone else said with a voice over saying This is Channel 5 part of the BT Network - very akin to the old Sky channel announcements!

But in reality all what will happen is what they do with ESPN - keep the name and cross promote the channels

If it was owned by an American channel - it does not necessarily mean that they would have a vast library of content as many of the programmes will already be licensed out to other networks, and they would have to bid for the programmes, just like all networks do, from their parent company.

BT could quite easily use it's look on C5 but keep the C5 name by simply having it's logo rotating around a 5 to link the branding.

Would they want to though? The Channel 5 brand is hardly thought of as a respectable broadcaster.
