why is that played again this year?
Cock up rather than a planned decision I imagine.
Good spot - I've just a rummage through the archives and the same programme played at exactly the same time on Christmas Day 2012.

A nice idea that doesn't work. Surely the live picture is all you need to provide a countdown at this time of year - it's fairly obvious when it's the top of the hour, a lot of fireworks appear...
Also, I assume the BBC News Channel will miss the Australian extravaganza at 1pm as BBC1 is due to have a news bulletin then.

I presume it's easier to have a split screen than to produce the countdown graphics to overlay over the live images.
Couldn't they just have the full screen of Auckland and the countdown numbers and the BBC News box on that image? Looks a bit pointless with the split screen!

I guess adding the countdown to the live images would look strange because you would expect it to reach 0 at the same time as the live images, which is unlikely with the various delays involved.

Something really strange just on the BBC News Channel. Sound problems meant that Alex Deakin's weather forecast didn't have any sound. Then I heard a few noises, then Simon McCoy's voice. The vision then changed to a headline summary, with Simon making a funny commentary of the library picture - something about Beijing. There was also a camera shot from above the desk - he said 'what the hell is that shot?'
I think they then cut back to Breakfast. When the opt happened for real, Simon asked Carrie whether she was ready, sorting out her microphone cable, and that she's only got two days to go.
Sorry for the running commentary. Maybe someone is interested and/or capped it?
