It seems odd to see an animated GIF these days, let alone one on the BBC news site:

I thought I was back in 1998 when I saw that page.

There's a reason why we stopped using animated GIFs, they're tacky and add nothing to the story.

That's a pretty impressive article - fascinating, in-depth content, along with lots of features in various formats:

- Sidebar overview of the article towards the top, including a guide suggesting how long it will take to read, and an option to save it to Instapaper or Pocket

- iPlayer video featurettes

- Interactive 'then and now' slider

- Clickable image slideshow

- Video slideshow

- Links to other content (including one third-party link) to find out more about the subject matter

...along with the usual photos and sidebars that you'd expect to see in a BBC News article. I even like the ani-gif at the top - it's a pretty simple way to highlight the ubiquity and seemingly infinite abundance of the can. Excellent stuff.

Works fine for me...
EDIT: iPlayer doesn't seem to be working. Rest of the site fine, though.

Think the Blogs directory will be on its way out shortly, the top half of the page is blank and most of the blogs have now closed or moved to the new format.

Absolutely ridiculous - it's going because the sole complainants own clock was inaccurate, not the BBC. Typhical over reaction - all they had to do was reply and point out the time was linked to the PC clock and if it's inaccurate then they need to sort their own time out.

The Daily Mail has also picked up this story, surprisingly!

Can't believe the clock is going. Love that retro clock. Sad
