Well I don't really care. They're still not showing my region so why should I care if the box defaults to London or Birmingham?

Seriously though, most people are just going to see London on there, not bother to press the red button and just press '1' on their TV remote. So it's a bit of a waste of time and resources anyway. Just shove London on and forget about it, if they aren't going to do it properly!

Noggin – Thanks for the explanation but to have a national satellite service for over 3 years and then go back to a local regional feed before a full time English regional network is in place is unacceptable. OK, ‘England Today' would have cost some money but would have provided the sustaining service. The BBC must feel very secure in England to do this as I am sure they would not have tried or got away with it in Scotland, Wales or NI.

Am i the only one who doesn't see the BBC bothering to have its channels on satellite in the long term anyway?

OK, so until analogue is switched off SkyDigital customers need to use the satellite feeds for BBC channels other than 1&2, but in the long term, we will all have access to BBC channels, through DTT, which is far better and more cost effective as far as broadcasting the regions is concerned.

Once satellite goes back to being just an add-on service to 'normal telly', I can't see the BBC being able to justify paying to be available on Sky when they are available to everyone through an aeriel anyway.

That's assuming 13(?) million people pay £100 for free DTT coverage (or they buy a new tv). This doesn't give things like the interactive service that the BBC are putting so much effort into on satellite (it is the best platform for doing it) so I can't really see many people treating Sky like an 'add-on'.

Anyway, I got a very nice reply from the BBC today but dodging the bullet - they mentioned that Backup was used to remove the logos on interactive services and yet I specifically mentioned '0' which is used on FA Cup interactive. I'm positive that this feature can be enabled - even if it's only for 'power' users and only mentioned on the website for example. Time for a reply...!

In answer to Robert, a page or so back, I watched a LITTLE of Gordon.

It was mid-programme, and I don't know if he was timing himself up to a sub-opt, or something, but his delivery was soooooo slooooooow, I changed to another region before I nodded off.

I was mainly watching Auntie Sal in the south yesterday; I'll give Gordon another try another evening.

Agree with you on that one! The BBC has invested heavily in interactive and don't think anyone would really class Sky as an 'add on'.

I think that whatever the beeb will do, people will criticise it. And I for one will be one of the first to do so when I get BBCi and all that interactive stuff like you do sometime this year with cable. Lol!Very Happy

Lol, yeah he can be a little slow, but you get used to it! No, there are no subopts for the North West region, as the whole region is served by the one transmitter at Winter Hill.

I think I'll tune into Look North tonight.

Oh, before I forget, those of you who peeked at NWT last night, you will see something a little different tonight. Before they went on DSat, there used to be the BBC NEWS logo in white at the top of the inset, like this:

Then, in the anticipation of the new BBC ONE North West DOG in the top left hand corner on DSat, they removed the logo all together last night. However, this lunchtime we saw the addition of the logo, this time in black at the bottom of the inset, in the bottom left hand corner of the screen.

So, say if Gordan Burns was wearing that same suit tonight, you would not be able to see the logo? Or did you mean bottom left?

re-tune to a different transponder, and  re-sync to a different MPEG2 stream.  This would effectively leave you with a blue screen for a couple of seconds (as long as you get when you

So what? It takes longer to select a region with BBCi. Would it really matter if you have a visible hard switch between London and the region?

Or maybe they could rework space on their transponders - put a feed of BBC One England on every transponder that carries BBC Regions (which would mean two feeds of BBC One England), then use postcode mapping to allocate you one of the two BBC One England feeds (whichever is on the transponder which carries your region) and then switch to your region when the local news is on. As it would be on the same transponder it would presumably be less noticeable.

This cannot be considered a solution. Every small regional difference needs to get on to 101 automatically some how (and BBC2 regional programmes need to be on 102 - and DTT for that matter). ATM the BBC attitude to adding regional material (and ITV's for that matter) seems to be 'we've done this, this and this, but if you want this you can watch it on analogue'.

But analogue sadly won't be an option for much longer, they (and ITV) have to sort the regions out on SkyDigital and DTT properly somehow and soon. If they don't do it now they will just have to do it later, so why spend money on developing a system that can't be a permanent fixture?

Don't hold your breath for BBC Two regional opts in England on DTT and DSat. It is much more likely that the remaining BBC Two regional variations will slowly move to BBC One. After all - at the most regional times of year - there is only a short (3-5mins?) minute daily news opt, a 30 minute Thursday documentary (though this is not year round) and a 30 minute political programme (again not all year round)

This is less than 90 minutes A WEEK. I really think the Beeb will remove these variations, rather than buy two satellite transponders to allow DSat transmission, and install a second set of DTT opting kit in all the English regions.

After all the Beeb have already announced the Thursday programmes will be moving and relaunching on BBC One in peak time, later in the year. That will reduce the BBC Two variations to a maximum of an hour a week...

Oh great(!) Look North have moved the name further down the side bars. Seems like the DOG is here to stay... Sad

Uurrgh that Look North sidebar text looks stupid in the middle of the screen, what's even more stupid is it returns to the top of the screen on the Belmont sub-opt, consistency would be nice here.
