I've been thinking maybe Ofcom should allow Channel 5 to produce a totally 'National' (as opposed to International/National as per BBC, ITV and Channel 4) News programme. This would be cheaper for the Channel to produce and it would provide something unique to the channel.

Just a thought...

So they'd cover the British veto of the EU treaty how? They'd cover the Libyan war how?

Just a thought? Probably best not to think too hard in future.

They would be able to cover British issues within the EU, as it has something to do with the UK. As for Libya, you wouldn't see Regional News in the North East cover stories in the South West...so therefore you wouldn't see this covered on a totally National News programme unless we went to War or something.

So it's not purely national news, its Anglo-centric news.

Wouldn't you? What if a Geordie dies in a big disaster in Cornwall? What happens when a man from Darlington dies in Iraq?

You are simply wrong to suggest that news is so insular, even US news which tends to be horrendously inlooking still needs to report on international events to find their "American perspective".

What would you do if two nuclear powers the other side of the world were coming close to war?

Would you have covered the death of Osama Bin-Laden? Would you cover the election of a new US president? That would very well effect British peoples lives but you couldn't cover it on something explicitly branded as 'UK Only News'.

Even the worse tabloid news papers have to cover international stories, they just try and put some UK relevant angle on it. Which I'd assume, without watching it, that's what Channel 5 do already.

The sad thing about your idea is I suspect some folk might actually tune in to such a bulletin marketed as 'UK Only News'. I've heard people say the don't like Comic Relief as it helps people in Africa rather than UK.

Yes I've heard stories about people not liking Comic Relief for that reason too. Embarassed

I guess the Osama or new U.S President stories couldn't be covered by a 'UK only News' bulletin...unless there was some sort of '60 seconds' type round up before the main programme. Don't think this idea is one of my greatest though to be honest...but hey there are many bad ideas in Broadcasting. That's the good thing about forums, you get many different viewpoints to different ideas...I come in peace!

Surprised no-one mentioned this yesterday, but Emma Crosby was a guest on The Wright Stuff (on Thurs) and she mentioned that they're going back to ITN in the next couple of weeks, apparently it'll be a bit 1997-esque again.

Hopefully that will take it back to the newsroom setting. I suppose what channel 5/ITN have to do is exactly what they had to in 1997, to make their news output distinct.

I'm not sure about the exact details (except for the fact that it launches in late February) but whatever appears on screen in a few weeks is only an interim until the operation moves to another permanent location. For the time being I believe it will be coming from Gray's Inn Road.

I'm at ITN all next week so I won't be doing channel 5 weather, but when I'm back there'll be shiny new graphics and a new studio!

Regarding the interim period, if it is newsroom based, surely they could be carried across to the move to Northern & Shelk HQ without much impact to the average viewer. Though I suppose it depends on the set up at N&S, if there is that functionality, or if a studio has been built.

Hopefully if N&S are creating a news specific studio they will be able to build something looking onto a newsroom, rather than the possiblility of trying to recreate one in a blocked off studio.

It won't be anything like that. Doesn't even come close.

Wednesday is the last full Sky News produced programme.

Monday 20th is the launch.

Well according to Emma Crosby when she appeared on The Wright Stuff, the old sitting at the front of the desk routine could be making a comeback...
