I miss the days we'd have got something magnificent like Perfect Day made for this event

The best ever BBC logo, I miss it very much. There is no excuse for not using it any more what with all this modern technology. If text does not look good next to it then standardise on a single upright font (like now) or just use it on its own, as logos are meant to be used.

Why does everything like this look so damn PowerPointy cheap nowadays? Black background, flip effect, faux film grain.

How to do it right.

The thing is that it can look good and does in that image.... but it can look absolutely awful. If you look back to the last few years before it was ditched it was used on air in all sorts of random ways and when it was very small on screen it looked jagged. That latter problem probably would have been fixed by HD, but they would have had over a decade of it looking **** on digital TV. Design-wise it was flawed: the 3 dashes originally represented Wales, Scotland and N Ireland... no England? and being 4 coloured it was unnecessarily expensive to use in print

The current logo is much simpler, classic and timeless. Also, even though they've been relaxed somewhat, its basic design rules mean that it doesn't get mangled like it's predecessor

Blink and you'll miss it. Nice to see a glimpse of the classic logos on-air in this way, despite the basic approach. Spotted it after Breakfast for the first time here - I guess that was the 1st airing as well?


Aye, Perfect Day stands out as the best BBC corporate promotion I've seen - I recorded it to VHS at the time, which I'd forgotten until a search unearthed the tape only about a year ago!

Around the same time in 1997 marked 75 years of the BBC itself, with promos featuring (to name but two from memory) Gorbachev and the Dalai Lama, praising the corporation - and often resolving with a piano sting similar in style to the 1991 logo music, equally eerie-sounding too. I would say, if there was any particular time when the BBC really peaked promotionally, it was 1997.

That said, from a personal point of view when seeing the logos in isolation, it is the 1991 design that still resonates the strongest.

I've only seen it the once - just after Breakfast this morning.

Looking at the BBC's schedules today, only BBC Four appears to have anything relevant with a TV at 75 strand this evening from 8pm - http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/programmes/schedules/2011/11/02

It also looked a bit silly when you put a line or two of text underneath it in the same font - the slant created the effect that it was all sloping off the page.

I can't truly blame them for being so low key about the whole thing, quite a few things have changed significantly since then and going all out with a big celebratory campaign would be seen as wasteful and attract a fair share of detractors especially in the face of their DQF policy.

In all fairness, all of those Channel 4 idents were animated. The BBC logo, besides BBC Video, has rarely ever been animated on television.

Surely the Red, Green and Blue that make up your TV picture? That the nations were able to use their own monochromatic version was a useful byproduct.

We did just get a re-edit of the 'Bring me sunshine' trail before Doctors - though the ending was a wee bit confused as to whether it was promoting BBC One or BBC Television.
