BBC Four are to repeat Sarah Jane's last classic story The Hand of Fear as a tribute to Liz:

So The Hand Of Fear parts 1 and 2 were on tonight on BBC Four as a tribute. It'd be interesting to keep an eye on the ratings for this. If they're high enough the BBC might consider putting Classic Who on the channel regularly.Which would be quite nice.

Does this mean UKTV have officially 'lost' the rights to the classic series?

Would BBC Four be able to afford both Dr Who & TOTP reruns?

I Doubt there have lost the rights, BBC still controls them. I would put money on bbc four getting the rights to broadcast these episode as a tribute:

I doubt UKTV ever had exclusivity. BBC Two showed a few serials c.1999 and BBC Four did in the mid-00s, when UK Gold and UKTV Drama were showing them respectively.

Sci-Fi Channel showed some of the UKTV omnibus edits last year over the Easter break (bizarrely as "Sci-Fi Movies"), just before the channel became Syfy.

Repeats of Doctor Who and Top of the Pops are incredibly cheap, but it's not BBC Four's remit to provide constant repeats.

As nice as that would be, I doubt they would. Otherwise there would be Doctor Who regularly on BBC One, BBC Three AND BBC Four.

Gosh, what a dreadful idea.

If TOTP can be shown in the right order on the channel, it would be nice to see a double bill of Doctor Who once a week in Doctor order. Could be a way of gradually working their way up to the 50th anniversary.

Yes, when the BBC (or any other broadcaster) sells a programme to a digital channel it doesn't remove their right to show it. There are many programmes that get shown on BBC channels that are also in the libraries of the likes of UKTV.

I don't suppose there's anything stopping a distribution group selling exclusivity in one market for a fixed period, but in the case of BBC Worldwide selling to an operator in the UK this would be controversial to say the least.

There's always been the thought of a BBC Gold, which would solve this, however it would be outside the BBC's remit to provide a complete repeats channel (unless there was some new programming invested, but it's unlikely the channel would ever be approved anyway). The solution to this is UK Gold, but look how that's turned out.

GOLD really needs restoring to how it was ten or fifteen years ago.
