IIRC (from what I remember from tvradiobits.co.uk) in the early 80's there was a summer when there was no provision for South East news* and so the South and South East had a service from Southampton, maybe the convention goes back to that.

*the only South East news was as part of Nationwide/Sixty Minutes, I think the gap was between NW finishing and SM launching

That's right - this happened on two occasions in fact, the two weeks leading up to the start of Sixty Minutes in 1983, and then again for a fortnight in August 1984 before the start of London Plus.

I've been reliably informed that Peter Cockroft is on his way back from Canada and should be back on-air tomorrow.

Is the new horrible blue London skyline backdrop a permanent change?

I assume it's election related being blue and yellow

Watching the lunchtime bulletin and it occurred to me that Katherine Carpenter has never hosted the main 6.30 bulletin. Is that right?

I think it may very well be....unless of course anyone knows differently as they say.

She seems just as competent as the other presenters, so it's odd that she hasn't been given a chance to do the show.

Anybody see the Sunday late bulletin? It crashed from the end of the national bulletin straight into the opening report with the audio from two different reports mixed together. It then faded out before the title sequence came up,in the middle of the titles was a two-three second shot of a rather bemused-looking Alice Bhandakravi. She then read the first item before apologising for "the technical difficulties at the start of the bulletin".

Also yesterday's lunchtime bulletin went out in the South East region as they weren't able to opt-out for reasons unknown.

I believe a power failure at Bluebell Hill caused some transmitters and relays in the South East region to go into Rebroadcast Mode and, thus, carried BBC London rather than TWS...

Video server seems to be playing up for BBC London tonight.

The titles didn't play and we were briefly switched to a BBC1 breakdown slide before things got going.

Another breakdown tonight. They finished a report and there was a one second shot of Katherine before it jumped straight to Helen Willets with the national weather, missing out the London forecast and the end of the BBC London show completely!

Edit: if you have your region set as London and you go to the live stream of BBC1 on the BBC website it says BBC London News on now (started 19.55) and lists Pirates Of The Caribbean as on next at 20.20-it started at 20.00!

It's now showing Pirates as per the BBC1 transmission but still says it started at 20.20

Possibly related - at the end of Look North (Y&L) Crispin Rolfe said he would be back "just before 11" - well its scheduled for 22.35. So would suggest this additional 20 mins is common through regions? Presumably due to an uncertain end to Golf earlier?
